Petrol or diesel shouldn't make any odds, more likely better to just check the part numbers but I'd imagine they'd be the same units in both.

Its a little vague to say will a gasser work? Is this gasser a 1982?

The way to know would be to look at the compressor numbers. Your tdi probably has a Sanden sd7v16 compressor and the clutch from a gasser with Sanden sd7v16 will work on your Sanden sd7v16.

But a comparable year gasser will probably have a Sanden sd7v16 compressor also.

Some aftermarket compressors that replace Sanden compressors are their own design and you cant transfer their clutch to the original Sanden compressor.

i have several customers that bring in compressors from 2.0, 1.8t, ant vr6 mk4 generation vw's. all fit. as coolairvw stated. if swapping just the clutch, make sure you are swapping the the same brand/model.

i have a used Reman. one i will sell you off of a TDI $50 shipped to your door.

IIRC the clutch / pulley on the VR6 compressor has an extra rib. It will work too, you just have to be careful to line the belt up properly.
