As I mentioned in another thread I have a 1.9 TDI in a Samurai. I did not do the engine swap and I am not sure what year it is. Someone in the injector service business told me it is an engine out of Canada if it is an 87 or 88? I just need to determine the year for further service stuff. There are no electronics associated with the pump. I was also told by a guy in town who has a 1.6 that it is not a 1.9.... Thanks in advance for any help. This is a great forum!

Is there a sticker on the timing belt cover with the engine code on it?
Does it have a turbocharger?

Also, if you post a photo the forum members may be able to rule out certain options right off the bat.

Post some pictures of your engine
Would be a good starting point. :)

Particularly the valve cover and injectors area.

1.6 TurboDiesel from VW to USA 1983-1986
Canada 1983-1992

Most of those conversions were done with 83 and 84 Quantum TD engines.
They were set up for transverse mounting from the factory.

If there are 8 nuts securing the valve cover around the perimeter -
its a 1.6

If you want the full specs as to what year model the block, head, Inj Pump are - go to this website

http://www.vwdiesel.net/forum/

Join and enjoy the brotherhood - great guys.

The block will have a 2 digit code stamped into it.
The head will have a cast part number
The inj pump will have a stamped part number

Out of curiosity, where did you buy it, Slim odds, but I sold my 1987 1.6td to a fella in Edmonton a few years ago, and he swapped it into a Samurai. The 1.6 has the fuel pump at the front of the motor, or most likely on the left of how the engine would sit in the Samurai.

It could also be a 1.9 IDI AAZ engine.

Threadjack - Baron! Nice to see you around again :) /end threadjack

Baron, Geo and all,
No nuts or bolts around the perimeter of the valve cover, I took several photos but the posting rules say I can not post attachments. Perhaps newbys are restricted from posting photos. I did get a number sequence off of the pump, I hope to order a seal kit based on that information. There are some good tube vids. showing the repair procedure. Thank you again for your help.

Looks mostly like a 1.9 IDI Turbo Diesel - Code AAZ 1993-1997 Canadian

Maybe possible its a 1.9 TDI - Code 1Z or AHU 1996 - first half 1999
That has had a Manual TDI Conversion Injection Pump

You really need to check and verify the casting/part numbers on the Inj Pump, Cylinder Head, and Block.

It is using a 1.6 IDI TurboDiesel Intake Manifold, Exhaust Manifold, DownPipe and Turbo. So most likely it is a Hybrid Built 1.9 IDI - AAZ.

At minimum, the head is the 1.9 style

The 3 letter engine code and serial number are etched on the injector side of the engine, on the block, along the transmission mating end. Good luck looking through that to see it clearly.
