eligibleli, you don't need a TDI expert for the DSG fluid change. Any decent VW-Audi shop should be able to do it, and the rest you can do yourself.

But it is time you located the various non-dealer shops you'll want to deal with. Different shops, maybe, for different purposes. A dealership should always be your last recourse.

Y'all say that, but anytime I ask for a local suggestion, all I hear is crickets. There are supposed to be two recommended shops in the Charlotte area but they never email me back so am uncertain if either is even open. Of course, it doesn't help that they are both on the opposite end of Charlotte (30+ miles) from me and one of the dealers is less than 10 miles.

In my case, I drove to oilhammer for a job that the independents on the list that I'd go to wouldn't touch (and one actually told me to go to one of the local dealers).

(True, I did it when I was passing through St. Louis anyway, but had I not been, I would've bypassed the heater core until heat was needed, and then made a special trip to St. Louis for the repairs.)

I can't tell you what TDI experts are near you. But I can tell you that you don't need a TDI expert to service your DSG transmission, which is now used in a dozen or more VW and Audi models. You need a shop that specializes in VWs and Audis, not one that specializes in TDIs. Not for this specific maintenance issue.

I understand about the dsg but eventually I will need a timing belt. I know of one VW/Audi specialty shop in charlotte and it's not much closer. On of my flex fridays, I'll take a run over there and talk to them. Although with the recent HPFP failures being posted, I may stay with the dealer to keep up the "good will".

Relevant Short Blurb - I had been having smoking issues with my TDI and I was stuck in limp mode for a few months. Took it to 4 different mechanics, had the MAF, fuel filter, Vacuum Lines, Flex Pipe with Cat Conv, N75 and N18 replaced, and had the EGR valve and intake manifold cleaned. It was still smoking and my fuel economy was still messed up.

I was just going to buy a new EGR valve because it was smoking from there, but Mike (the guy who owns the shop and TDI specialist) said I could take your money ($125 new OEM EGR Valve w/ Anti Shudder), but I think you may just need some gaskets. He then proceeded to do the work on my car, fix it in less than an hour, check the timing and also adjusted the amount of fuel (black smoke = improper fuel ratio) to give me more economy. The issue is solved, I got my power back and almost no smoke.

He has extremely affordable prices, is an ebay seller, and works on not only TDIs, but also VWs BMWs and Audis in general. Very solid guy and knows his stuff.

His name is Mike and email is leftlanecars@gmail.com, give them a call if you're in the North Jersey area and need some good work done at an affordable price (labor - $85/hr and parts are also good quality and affordable).

Honored to be added to the list. I have been servicing European cars in the Cape Cod area for over a decade now, and have been a VW fan my whole life :)

I feel your pain man. I offer two suggestions that might be kind of far away, but both of these suggestions know what they are doing. Suggestion one, "Everything Euro" in Winston-Salem, NC. They have done some work on my car and can be trusted. Great reviews on Google as well. Suggestion two, there is a guy named Richard who owns a shop called Long Automotive. He has been working on VW's for almost 30 years now. Just my .02.

Thanks. Winston-Salem is about 100 miles but close to where my daughter is going to school (UNCG). Have you heard anything about Das Autohaus in Greensboro? There just down the street from campus.

Went to a local dealer. He quote me $260 for a DSG Transmission fluid change....which includes parts and labor... Labor alone is 95.

Is this a fair qoute?

German Automotive Service and Repair in Portland?

Can't find forum info for German Automotive Service and Repair. Maybe I missed a review for them? They're at 16677 SE McLoughlin Blvd., Portland, OR 97267. Anyone have work done with them? They were recommended to me and yelp reviews are positive. Was told Kevin there is great. Thanks

I have not. The name sounds German at least ;). Haha, I wouldn't go off that, just saying. Good luck to whoever you go with!

@kjclow @panthers89fan90 are you guys talking about der wagenhaus? oddly enough my brother had an 87 GTI back then, went to UNCG, and took his car there.

http://www.derwagenhaus.com

I have no idea why I remember this place - but I do recall good things in 1990. I'd search for more timely advice. :)

That's it. When we've driven by, they have older VWs out front but haven't stopped to ask about diesels.

Good work from Trusted Mechanic

Hi All,

I just wanted to give a shout out for the good work I received from r90sKirk. I was caught off guard by not having my pole barn finished in time to do the TB replacement and had Kirk do the work for me. I am very happy with everything he did for me. Anybody in the Mid Michigan area looking for a good mechanic, I can attest to his work.

Thanks again, Kirk. It was a pleasure meeting you.

I emailed them asking specifically about tdi service but have not heard back for a couple of days now. I'll post their response once or if I get anything. It would be nice to have someone that's more in the direction I tend to travel.

You need help, but you do not need a TDI specialist. You just need a competent mechanic, preferably one familiar with Volkswagens.
Anyone have a lead on one of those there seems to be a lack of those here as well!
