That's what I'd like to do too. Where do you buy the spares and how much do they generally cost? Thanks!
you get them from the trunk of 3 of your other TDIs that you returned without spare tires.

or go buy a set of crap tires on CRAIGSLIST. You can get a crap set of wheels/tires for $0-$100, (based on my experience).

my local junk yard sells steel rims w/whatever shoes left on em for $30 each w/out a core..

I just replaced the OEM tires right before the scandal broke, they have a ton of life left on em and my other VW is going to need new shoes very soon..

Well, our buyback specialist checked the trunk and is giving us a hard time about not having a spare tire...

Sitting here at the dealership waiting for him to get a return phone call.

FYI I returned my car 2/24/17 to Parkway VW in Valencia, CA. Buyback rep said she also covers Oxnard. I didn't really take anything, left the monster mats and clear bra and all. Rep didn't even look at my car, I was inside when she walked in and she never left the building before I had my receipt and left. It was never started for her and she never hung the "this vehicle is not for sale" tag on it. Nothing at all while I was there.

The rep told me she had already rejected cars with 4 spares because she felt that was an intentional act (well duh), so YMMV. . I am not discussing the merits of stripping or removing things from the vehicle, just passing on what I've been told. Good luck

He finally accepted our vehicle, but said we could be delayed getting our money and also subject to investigation down the road....

Really, over a missing spare tire...lol. Give me a break.

Why even risk it in the first place? is a spare tire that valuable?

In addition to returning the spare, I gave them a 50% worn original Continental I had sitting around, in case they suffered a flat in their parking lot and needed to mount a replacement.

I suspect a good space saver spare on a good rim might be worth more than a junkyard steel wheel with a worn out tire.

Well, it does fit the B5.5 Passat. With all the people turning in salvaged vehicles, damaged vehicles, missing navi units, putting 4 spare tires on the car, and stripping parts off, I really didn't think that missing a spare tire would be a deal killer

I see your point there, but I personally don't condone any of the above actions.

Don't we own the spare tire in the car since we purchased the car? Aren't we allow to do as we wish with the spare ? I am missing my jack. Are they gonna give grief ?

I would say probably not, no grief, but don't forget you also purchased the engine to go with the car, so according to your theory you can keep the engine too :)

Of course you own the spare--you own the car as well. And you can take the doors off the car that you own as well. But if you take the doorless car to the dealer, they aren't likely to buy it back, and the judge has been pretty clear that they don't have to. I don't think they should reject cars for simply missing a jack or a spare (they haven't even looked on any of the three I've turned in), but simply saying "it's my car" is irrelevant to the question.

The car you are selling back is the car you own. I would say, if your car was delivered to you without a spare, as some cars are these days, but you then bought one as an accessory, then it is indeed your property, separate and apart from the car itself.

However, if your car came with a spare, standard equipment, then it is part of the car that should be returned.

Thanks for the clarification. How about the floor mats ? I think I paid extra for those.

I feel you. I paid extra for Monster Mats, first aid kit, the trunk liner and CarGo blocks, the lip spoiler, and side body molding. I kept the first aid kit because I never used it and it looks exactly like the Honda accessory kit (they're probably made in the same factory and get a different logo at the end of the process). I considered keeping the CarGo blocks, but I got the plastic cargo area liner in my Pilot so they would have been useless.

The factory radio in my car was one of those that died completely. I installed an aftermarket radio, will I have a problem? I still have the original.

My "buyback ambassador" didn't even check if my car ran. She was super nice and thorough though and explained everything... I probably could have sold a lot of things from the car but it wasn't worth the hassle for me. My experience was super easy.

Was it a nav system for which there was a separate buyback adjustment? If not, you'll be golden. If it is, you might, but you might not.

When I sell back my 2012 TDI Passat, can I turn in with no radio installed and the existing wheels (rims and tires) changed to four spares?
I had aftermarket wheels and rims and would prefer to keep.!
If it moves under its' own power ~~ you're good to good.

There's a lot near me where they bring VW's from buyback. They are parked in a lot in the way back.

Anyway, I did an "informal" inspection of the TDI's. Three had steel rims. One had a donut and three regular alloy rims. Two had broken sideview mirrors. One had a substantial front end collision (hood was buckled). All had the blue placard hanging off the rearview mirror.

Those cars were accepted, so I'm guessing you would be OK to return with steel wheels. I'm also thinking the radio would not be an issue. However, I couldn't confirm this as the lot is a fenced in lot, so I can't peer into the cars.

Was interesting seeing all the bumper stickers, decals, etc..... I'm wondering what they are going to do with all these cars.... had to be over a thousand there

My return was canceled today because the radio was missing, 2014 Passat SEL(RNS-510). I sold the factory radio and installed a pioneer avic-8200nex. I contacted vw claims people on my way home from the dealer and spoke, I think everyone up the chain of command and they told me that the settlement specialist and Atlantic VW in NJ should not have canceled my appointment but should have put my by back on a 4 day hold so the situation could be figured out/fixed. In the end I need to have a radio in the car for the buyback to happen and now need to reschedule my appointment all over again. next appointment is april 6. VW is crazy if they think they are getting the pioneer.

just an fyi, at my turn in, the rep said he's supposed to reject cars on donut tires. I think that meant 4 donuts. Also... think it meant the sub-size donuts... not spares with real tires.

I bought literally the cheapest double-DIN HU I could find on Amazon and stuck it in the dash. I had installed a Pioneer AVIC-8000NEX and sold off the RNS-510 and, like you, was absolutely not going to turn it in with that.

It sucks because I didn't think their was going to be any issue not having a radio in it. but what really pisses me off is that out of the five different people I spoke with, two being supervisors they all different stories or reasons why my appointment was canceled. It was like they made **** up just to get me off the phone. I will be calling VWOA tomorrow to see if anything can be done to speed up my buyback since all of the people the use to do buybacks are incompetent.

man. some places have tough times with this. where i live, it did take month and half for available appointment at closest dealership. lady was nice, just asked me to move car to empty parking spot next to her desk. she asked if i had enjoyed driving it and that was it. she didnt inspect, didnt look at anything. swapped out with buddy's old radio and it was locked. spare and tools were not in car for some time.

my other buddy turned in his jsw with no radio. when they asked about it he said he had aftermarket radio and removed it. they just said "ok".

someone on here i think said agents have received notice not to accept cars on steelies or donuts. not sure why they wouldnt take steelies.

The business with aftermarket items is.....unfortunate. As far as swapping out the stock items on the car for obviously inferior components (e.g., changing out the alloy wheels for junkyard steel wheels mounted with bald eagles), that's questionable. It's reasonable that the car be turned in equipped as it was purchased, although it's unreasonable to say every little item must be stock....particularly since VW itself deals in so much aftermarket merchandise. Some people's experiences are obviously the result of the individual buyback rep, or what that person has been told (or thinks they've been told), and that's unfortunate, too.

Couldn't get a pic of the sheet i saw yesterday as i turned in our passat to load into this post. In addition to the must start and run under its own power statement, it says:

4 street legal wheels and tires (only 1 donut tire is acceptable)
Have its radio and related equipment
Must not be stripped of any of its parts
Or appear to have intentional damage or vandalism

We reserve the right to cancel your appointment until the vehicle is brought back up to acceptable standards. All reschedules are done through the claims portal or by calling the claims hotline.

We had no issues I had no donuts but put two used tires on about two months ago because those originals with 80k miles were very bouncy.

There are certainly a lot of VW wheels and floor mats on the local Craigslist. If you need a set it's a great time to buy.
