Good reading about what is coming for the 2008 VW TDI's

I wanted to start a thread where we can compile information on the New generation of CR4 systems. These will be Common Rail engines using 2500 bar pressures verses the current 2000 bar systems in the VW PD engines.

Thank you DBW. Very informative. Its apparant the fourth generation CR Bosch is developing will provide a performance increase while reducing emissions. But one sentence on the next to last page (right column) has me wondering about the effeciency (MPGs). It reads:

"On the other hand, due to the high technical value of the system a certain additional effort is expected by means of an overall cost penalty." Is this a fuel cost, or developmental cost?

I realize this paper is translated from German, so some words may not be literal translations. The above sentence could mean that the new CR system will cary a fuel penalty for the increased performance and lower emissions. Or it could mean that this system is more costly to design and produce.

After re-reading the sentence I tend to think the author is saying the systems development cost is higher. I do not think he wants to advertize that this system is less effecient, fuel wise, if it is.
