Something simple is making me nuts!

Previous owner installed bilsteins. I cannot find any oem style strut assemblies so have bought Monroe struts, springs, mounts and bearings and the top plate. I'm getting a noise at strut top.

What part of the strut assembly I missing?

Doesn't sound like you're missing anything parts wise but did you pay attention to how the parts are assembled, compared to the old struts?

Only thing I can think is that maybe the strut top lock nut is loosening on it's own?

Can you describe what kind of noise it is?

It sounds like there is play at the top, but when I disassemble it I don't see any rub marks where anything isn't staying where it should.
Going to use chassis ears later, maybe I'm chasing the wrong noise

What was wrong with the Bilsteins?

Monroe isn't my first choice for anything although I know others use them.

There are just too many to list....
Many B4s left the factory with Monroe shocks, as did some Brazilian built Volkswagens. ;)

However, you may have a noise like a sway bar link or bushing that is transmitting up into the body, I know sometimes they are hard to track down.
