Skoda Octavia TDI\'s Stateside?

Are Skoda Octavia TDI's available in the States?

Come to think of it, what is the availability of Skodas in the States? The a TDI version of the new Fabia is available here in Europe.

No Skodas, No Seats, and the only TDI available here is the 90 hp 1.9L. Pretty sad for us. You Europeans have all the fun.

Nope, Skoda has never sold cars in the U.S. to the best of my knowledge. I doubt they ever will--I don't think VW would want us to have a less expensive alternative that's virtually the same to their vehicles.

Re: Skoda Octavia TDI\'s Stateside?

It's easier to say what is available in the US than isn't:-

A3 Jetta TDI, 90bhp only, that is a Vento TDI to us Euros.

A3 Golf TDI, 90bhp only, that is a mk3 Golf to us Euros.

B4 Passat TDI, 90bhp only, that is 94-96 Passat to us Euros, rare 110bhp never sold in US.

A4 Golf TDI, current Golf, but only in 90bhp.

A4 Jetta TDI, current Bora, but only in 90bhp.

New Beetle, but only 90bhp.

That's it, no Audis, Seats, Skodas, new Passats (petrol only), Sharans, Polos, Lupos; no 110bhp, no 115bhp, no V6 TDI.

If I carry on, they'll all be in tears over there.

There were some Skodas (the rear-engined kind) sold in the USA in the early and middle 1960's, but they, like so many interesting and unusual cars, fell victim to the trade barriers which the Johnson administration camoflaged as safety laws.

Re: Skoda Octavia TDI\'s Stateside?

Just about all of the Skodas produced in the 60s,70s and 80s were rear engined. In some ways they were very similar in characteristics to the old VW Beetles (Bugs to you lot in the States). I owned a 1982 Skoda 105L when I lived in the Czech Republic. Noisy, slow and not exactly oozing in opulence - but 100% reliable, cheap as hell to service and great to drive!

It's thanks to Skoda becoming part of the VW group in 91 (or thereabouts) that we can relish and enjoy Skoda TDI's. One of the other groups interested in investing in Skoda at the time was Renault ... what a disappointment that would have been!

The one advantage we have over Europe is that our 90hp A4 models are equipped with the VNT-15 variable geometry turbos.

Christi, these didn't make it here or else Fred would have gotten one.
