Any good mechanics in Las Vegas for TDI's? How come the VW dealers are not on the list? Do they not do a good job or are they just too expensive?
Both. If you ever get up to the Reno area, Automotion in Reno is THE place to go for TDI's and any other European car. They can service or rebuild anything made by Bosch. Good prices, very good folks to deal with. The manager has three TDI's-- a Beetle, a Jetta and a Golf.

TB Change Appointment

JasonTDI, I can schedule a trip to WI in about 35K miles to get my TB changed. How long should I expect to stay in WI? I can bring my clubs if it is spring/summer/fall and play some golf if I am not allowed to watch/assist. Will keep you in mind.

Omaha, NE isn't far for a proper mechanic!

I just bought a 2002 Beetle and had some power issues. Found Chris Gibson (615 556 7692) on craigslist. He has mobile diesel repair business. He came over at 5:30 diagnosed my car found a loose vacuum hose, performed some routine maintenance and took the car from barely starting and blowing out plumes of smoke to running very smoothly in less than 2 hours. He then insisted on taking a test drive to make sure it was ok eventhough it seemed fine. VERY reasonable cost as well.

Would recommend to anyone in the Murfreesboro area.

Short stay! A couple hours. Everone is welcome to watch or leave. Lots of good golf around here!

Thanks!

I think as I get closer to the TB change time, I will schedule a couple days to drive up, change the belt, play around on a golf course, eat some cheese and drive home. Thanks.

Adam, I have a VAG-COM and will help you if you have any future problems. I'm in the Boro every now and then. I go to church there at the World Outreach Church. I'm new at the VAG-COM and we could learn a few things about it together. I know enough to fix a lot of problems, though. Plus, it won't cost you any money. I will keep Chris in mind for problems I can't fix myself. Hope you're enjoying the TDi. Phillip

Has anyone had any experience w/ Walt's Service in Columbia, MO engine-wise?

We were very happy w/ work they did on brake/emergency brake problems, and they seem knowledgeable re: diesels.

Trusted mechanic in NC?

I've looked in the list and done several searches. Is there a good TDI mechanic in the Triad area of NC that someone can recommend? While I could trailer the car to Raleigh or Kannapolis I can't really find any current info about either place.

I need the auto trans checked on the 2002 Jetta and maybe the charging system as well.

Anyone have any recommendations for someone with good experience in changing a timing belt, in New Hampshire? I can go there or use my heated shop.

I had TDIClub guru Steve (mtbr297) over in Ft Worth handle my 40,000 mile service (incl. DSG service) on my 2006 Jetta Pkg 1 last Thursday, and, after a trip to Oklahoma this past weekend, I must say that the car shifts much smoother now . He did a GREAT job, and I highly echo the multiple recommendations from others on the board about Steve. I will definitely be a return customer.

They did my timing belt a couple of weeks ago, Jaime the owner, told me timing was off a little and adjusted it, cars runs like a champ and starts instantly. He installed DG TB Kit for $90.00 per hr. His rates are $75.00 per hr. if he supplies the parts.

Great shop. Jose really knows his stuff...
Can anyone verify that Jose Davida at EuroTech Motors in Los Angeles services TDIs?
Everything I am reading about this shop indicates they are an Audi only shop.
To answer TDI Forum User Faster's question, EuroTech Motors ISN'T servicing TDI's. I called them today and you wouldn't believe their statement:

Quote from Euro-Tech: "We don't repair TDI's anymore. We stopped a few months ago. The owners know too much."

Some background...I found a leak in my steering gear box and it looks to be a bigger problem than I can fix. I wanted to find a good mechanic, and heard a few things about EuroTech on the net. A different user mentioned Jose wasn't taking TDI's, but I wanted to talk to him directly.

EuroTech sounds like the shadiest TDI mechanics in Los Angeles--they only work on cars from people they deem to be stupid. I wonder why that is...

Since your problem has nothing to do with the TDI engine or injection system, there shouldn't be any reason why Euro-Tech would refuse to work on your car.

As for why Jose doesn't want to work on TDIs any more -- only he can answer that. Maybe he's concentrating on running the business, and he doesn't have anyone else he can trust to do the work properly.

I totally agree--I was just so shocked to hear that strange response from them. I told him that my automotive problems weren't part of the TDI system, but by that time I've confirmed his assertion that TDI users are knowledgeable. Then he ended the conversation.

Wow.. That's something else... I actually like it when a customer comes in and knows something about what they are driving.. It makes it a whole lot easier explaining what's wrong with the car.. Selling work is a lot easier since most of the time they already have a good idea as far as what's wrong and they usually have an idea about how much it'll cost so there aren't too many surprises. Knowledgeable people are usually a little more friendly and respectful as well... I'll fix dumb people's cars too, I don't discriminate:p...

My mind is not as sharp as it once was, but isn't this the shop that trashed a motor in a NB last year necessitating an engine replacement? Bad timing belt job? IIRC, owner sourced a motor from bleachedbora and had it installed.

I think the owner was going to go after them after we explained how he got shafted.

The only real complaint I found was this:

Well, it didn't go quite as well as expected. To be fair to Jose, he didn't do any of the work (he mostly manages the operation now) but there were quite a few things wrong with the car when I picked it up.

Hose bib broken off of TPS - hose simply hanging
Fastners missing on vacuum pump & hose brackets
Fastners missing on timing belt cover assembly
Injection timing clear off the map (30) although, to his credit, he was trying to set if for Colorado winter. Higher timing numbers have better cold start characteristics.
Injection pump spocket nut had plier marks all over it
Coolant level too low to drive home
Other misc. fastners missing
etc, I could go on

Jose is a great guy but if you are going to have any serious work done at Euro Tech know that the master tech will likely not be working on your car himself.

-Faster
Then Left Coast Resident answered:

I had been planning to use Jose to do some non-engine related items on my TDI's, so this caught my eye. I knew Jose didn't know TDI specific procedures (such as the TB), but that would have no affect on chassis items. So I visited him and asked him about what happened to Faster. He was very concerned and told me that the technician that worked on this particular car is no longer there. What he did if anything, about dissatisfaction with Faster, is unknown to me.

The shop has 3 bays, appears to have 3 employees (including Jose), does most jobs by appointment, is well stocked (including plenty of new TTY bolts) and is neat and organized. You can request that Jose do the work, and you can hang around and watch / get in the way. You can get a price quote in advance, something I typically do, as I dislike surprises. The long and the short of it is that he installed a set of Bilsteins and a pair of front rotors for me at a fair price and did them correctly. For me, it was a good experience, and I would recommend him for non-diesel specific things.
This was all in early March 2007. If Jose got rid of the guy who did such a sloppy job, that left no one else except Jose to work on TDIs.

It sounds to me like Jose doesn't plan to ban all TDIs from his shop -- he just doesn't want to take the time to train someone to work on TDIs, in particular the engine and injection systems.

FWIW, Faster hasn't posted since then, so if anything happened later that required a new engine, he never mentioned it on this forum.

Mountain view motors. I will trust these guys with anything on any of my cars. They recently worked on my Beetle TDI they know TDI's like the back of their hads. The owner, John, is one of the nicest guys I have met. Not only are they experts, they are very reasonalby priced.

Just called E&L in Clermont Florida and asked about my 02' Golf TDI; he said "we don't work on those."
I called them recently and was informed that they moved from Clermont. I also did not get a warm and fuzzy from the conversation so it wouldn't make sense for me to go out of my way to have them do work on my car.

My poor 2003 TDI just came home from the dealership. It was leaking a small amount of diesel onto my garage floor. I'm told the Fuel Injection Pump needs to be replaced. I'm a TOTAL newbie at this...as you'll probably be able to tell by reading this!

Well I nosed around on this site because I really can't swing the $1200 + labor quoted by the dealership. I found my way to this page - http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?p=1026329 - and I called Harv at Wild Rose for some ideas. He was very helpful and thinks that having the seals replaced should fix the problem.

HOWEVER, I don't see anyone near my home on the reputable mechanics list. I'm hoping someone will read this and take pity on me...either recommending someone who can replace the seals or do it himself! I don't want to end up getting taken advantage of, which is all to easy in these situations.

Please let me know if you know someone who can fix this problem somewhere near my house. I am driving the car, but I'm worried about it and, well, it's starting to get pretty stinky in my garage! Thank you TDI Clubbers!

Cheryl
