Engine Fault Severity

As I was headed home last night, the flashing glow plug light in my 2000 Golf GL went on. It's a stop and go city driving situation. After about two minutes, the indicator stopped flashing and hasn't gone one again. What I'm wondering is, does the duration of the flashing indicator vary with the severity of the fault code?

In other words, since it was only on for a couple of minutes, is this something I need to rush to the stealer to have diagnosed?

Mine (and others) have been a bad brake sensor. It's about $10 and easy to install. They say the new ones are improved.
