The clear bra on my 05 Passat is in sad shape. Is there an effective means to remove without damaging the paint or taking great effort?

Have you tried peeling it off using a hair dryer and patience?
That is my thought. Just thought i might check to see if anyone had a better idea. Will it leave behind adhesive residue that is difficult to remove or come off clean?

You can remove the adhesive with Prep-Sol. It is what body shops use to clean panels just before painting. Or straight Zylene. It wont hurt the paint. (I bathed my whole new Audi A4 with it (I asked the dealer NOT to do anything other than peel off the white vinyl. I had nightmares of some 17 year old putting swirl marks in my car with a high speed buffer)

Paint it with VW clear coat and it will peel right off in a few months ;)

Leave your car in the sun for a while and then slowly peel it off. Use 3m adhesive remover or wd40 to remove the residue.
