Thanks Guys what is my best chance to get car off highway? Tools in trunk. Replace pump and hope I can limp it home? Or check filter first? I called the state Police and it's red tagged and if there Monday AM it will be towed. I will push and steer at the same time first.

Have it towed to nearest dealer and ask them to repair it at no cost to you...

http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=414955 HPFP failure sending metal through the entire fuel system. 2010 Jetta TDI dsg auto 112,000 miles. Because of the cost to repair a claim has been filed with Geico my insurance carrier. I have full coverage and because of mileage I know they could total it.
Have you spoken to VW to see if they would fix it on their dime? They have covered many cars with the same problem.

What kind of insurance do you have that would cover failures?

Geico offers mechanical breakdown insurance. $250 deductible. Costs around $5-7/month and is good up to 100,000 miles and I think** 7 years,

Not sure if this is what he is referring to.

I currently am carrying it.

Either way, if the insurance company is being responsible, they will ask you to ask VW to fix it first. VW has been fixing many (most) of these. Since they don't have a real 'fix' for the issue, simply repairing the ones that do break down is really their only option. Short of that, they'd be looking at being forced into a recall that they can't do, as there is nothing to 'fix'. Either way, it's certainly worth paying a tow truck to yank it off the side of the road and get it to the dealer to get the process started.

2011 Jetta Sportwagen TDI DSG
Year: 2011
Build Date: pending
Make/Model: VW Jetta Sportwagen TDI
Tranny: DSG
Mileage: (actual miles at time of problem or when problem began) 52,375
Diesel Fuel Source: (Shell, Exxon, etc.) Chevron, 76
Additives: (Yes/No) No
Problem: (HPFP failed, fuel canister rusted, etc. Give as much factual data as you can.) HPFP failed, sending shrapnel throughout fuel system. Occurred when at fwy speed - about 65 mph. Glow plug warning light came on, engine lost power. I was able to limp along at about 40 mph to dealership which thankfully was only about 3 miles away. I was able to restart the engine to move the car once at the dealership (and before I knew what happened).
Dealer: (ex. SmokeAndMirrors VW or VW of Fallacy Idaho) Roseville VW of Roseville, CA
Status: (still pending, dealer fixed everything, resolved, dealer refused, paid out of pocket) Dealer fixed everything (i.e. entire fuel system). Fast response from VW to cover all costs (which tells me how common this is), and they supplied a loaner car at no charge for the 5 days it was in the shop.

Diesel Fuel Source: (Shell, Exxon, etc.) Shell, Chevron
Additives: (Yes/No) No
Problem: (HPFP failed, fuel canister rusted, etc. Give as much factual data as you can.) HPFP failed while braking on a freeway off-ramp while in the process of trading the car in (tell me about it). Glow plug light started flashing, car lost power, then the CEL came on. Car died and would not re-start. Mazda Dealer also owned the local VW store so they honored our pre-HPFP deal and helped me push it to their lot. Asked dealer to keep me up to date on diagnosis. Came back one week later as HPFP failure with full replacement of fuel system. VW agreed to cover under warranty. Car has 3/4s of a tank of fuel. Last diesel purchase was made from a high volume Chevron station on Ygnacio Valley Road in Walnut Creek.
Dealer: (ex. SmokeAndMirrors VW or VW of Fallacy Idaho) Dirito Brothers, Walnut Creek CA.
Status: (still pending, dealer fixed everything, resolved, dealer refused, paid out of pocket) Mazda dealer told us that VW fixed everything under warranty. Total tab around $8,500.00

Diesel Fuel Source: Hess station on Joppa Road in Towson, MD. Station has lots of traffic and many other diesel users.
Additives: Never use them
Problem: Car simply stopped running while on the road on May 20, 2012. Entire fuel system replaced according to my dealer, Valley Mercedes of Cockeysville, MD. When I got car back after waiting for 2 weeks, they had replaced the old HPFP with a new, DEFECTIVE HPFP. Dealer said that the fault was with metal shavings from a defective fuel tank manufactured in Mexico. Flash fast forward to May 27, 2014, while driving on a 30 MPH 2 lane road, glow plug dash light came on and car began losing power as if I were running out of fuel (tank had only 60 miles on it). When I stopped at a Stop sign, engine died and will not restart. Car towed into dealer who showed me a list of 60 some parts that VW told them to order. They are going to replace the entire fuel system AGAIN. Car due to be ready for return to service on Friday, June 6.

Teemus: You have a defective dealer (made in Mexico?). The metal shavings were from the HPFP that shredded itself.
I don't understand the sequence of events in your post. In May of 2012, they replaced your HPFP (#1), and then immediately had to replace it (now #2 replacement) because it was defective? Now, in 2014, another failure, with replacement #3?
(You might want to try using a quality additive, and see if your HPFP failures stop!)

If VWdoesn't cover repair under warranty, perhaps you could buy it from your father's employer for, say around $6,000?

I would love a JSW for the space but my Golf is good for 90% of what I do and looks cooler. Plus being in the process of buying a house puts me a little stingy on cash.
