My God (excuse me, Buda or alah or...) what thin skin. Yes I read the sensitivity training handbook, but you obviously read into the comments. Not even about race, just attaching a know origination. This thread at first interested me (GTG, must mean something other than "get to gather"). We could sit down and color?
Later
I didn't read into your comments. You plain and simply stated exactly as WHO suggests not to do. Did you read the articles?
From article: The WHO referenced guidelines set in 2015 that ensure the name does not refer to a geographical location, an animal, an individual or group of people, while still being pronounceable and related to the disease. ... “Having a name matters to prevent the use of other names that can be inaccurate or stigmatizing,” said Director-General of the WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
Is it hypersensitive of me to recognize the marginalization of a group of people?
You know what happened in 2009 with regard to the H1N1 outbreak? Yeah, a bunch of thin skinned, hypersensitive folks thought that the original name (Swine Flu) was impactful to a certain group of people.
From the article: "In 2009, the WHO stopped using the term “swine flu” and replaced it with Influenza A (H1N1), following a drop in the pork market."
Yup, those thin skinned and hypersensitive, US pork farmers...
Regarding your defense of attaching a place of origin to the name of the disease.
From the article: The 1918 influenza pandemic was widely called the Spanish Flu in the U.S., even though it did not originate in Spain.
Look out, by the end of this thing, COVID-19 could be renamed the United States Flu if we become the chart toppers...
Right or wrong on this example of COVID-19 origin, there are standard conventions and rules put in place for a reason, it's for the perceived better good of the community. Sometimes you agree with the conventions/rules, sometimes you don't...but they should be followed. You are not a special snowflake are you?
I've hosted at least half a dozen of these GTGs at my personal residence. Each GTG, my wife establishes the ground rules and expectations for all participants to follow. If you break the rules, you are asked to leave. She has escorted people off our property for speeding down our street and for being rude to our neighbors. If you can't/won't follow the expected behavior at a GTG, you wouldn't be the first to be walked to the door.
I can't make you change your ways. I can only try to educate you as to why your chosen words are not helpful. It's about following convention...for the benefit of pork farmers of all racial backgrounds.
You can call me thin skinned all day if you want, I have no issue. You are also welcome to sit down and color, stand and color, sit and twiddle your thumbs, or any other combination of tasks so long as you obey the rules of the gathering.
