I have a 2013 Passat TDI that I love, but am planning to sell back (instead of getting the fix) since the deal is so generous. Since the fix was recently approved by VW, how long should (can) I wait before selling my car back to VW? I have an extended warranty and would love to wait until late 2018 to sell it back to them, since I should get the same amount of money. Thanks in advance!

September 1, 2018 is the deadline to register for the buyback. You can stretch the actual buyback appointment to the end of 2018. But there's no harm in registering now. You won't be compelled to turn the car over until you are ready.

Thanks!

Thank you, PacCoastFwy923! That's good to know. I've had some advice from others that I shouldn't wait until next year: what happens if I have severe mechanical failure, or an accident that totals the car? In short, it would be risky to wait.

So... I may do the buyback sooner rather than later (looking at the 2017 1.8L Passat). :)

Insurance in a totaled wreck

You may come up short in a crash

My Golf as one example

Buyback is $25,625-ish

No way my insurance Co. will pay out that much.

That is one reason I am going for the "fix"

I get $7,051-ish (including BOSCH)

If bad luck hits me then I will get the " book worth" -- hopefully
