I know a little about the vagcom and what it does. The problem is i work on other cars and would like to know if there is a diagnostic tool that anybody knows of that will diagnose other cars and allow me to do what the vagcom does. Or am i stuck with having to have a different system for every type of car i work on. I would like to be able to pay for a single system that would to it all.

Thanks
Matt

A single system that will do it all. Snap-on has one that comes close. IIRC it runs about $3,000. VCDS (Vag-Com) does have a generic OBDII mode that works on most newer cars, but it really shines on VAG products. Generic OBDII codes (PIDs) usually only cover engine and emissions related problems. VW (and other manufacturers) have many proprietary fault codes that a generic OBDII scanner will not read (or interpret). It would probably be cheaper to buy VCDS and a "standard" OBDII scanner than to try to find something with the power of VCDS for all cars. For VW products, there is nothing that comes close to VCDS except for the dealer's own scan tool (and there are some things that VCDS will do that the dealer's tool cannot).

As stated above, the best place to buy it it straight from the maker.

http://www.ross-tech.com/

If you only want to be able to work on your own (2011) VW, the cheapest way is to buy this: http://store.ross-tech.com/shop/VCuCAN.html

If you would also like to "talk" to older VWs, you must pay $100 more and buy one of the HEX+CAN models like this one: http://store.ross-tech.com/shop/VCHUC.html
