Any idea if the likes of Speedway and Thornton's go to a lower percentage of bio for the winter? Maybe dino? Curious, as that would at least give me another option in the colder months.

Thanks.
good question. I have no idea but in 2008 I was under the impression that Speedway always had B11 and in the winter they switched back to straight diesel  (the receipts changed from "B11" to "D2" around October/November, IIRC)

since the "labeling laws" or whatnot changed in 2009(?) I haven't seen anything other than the "6-20" labels

I would assume that anyone selling more than B20 would go to a lower % for the winter, if not straight diesel all-together

if you are worried about gelling, I wouldn't be too scared since the bio at those types of places is only B6-B20 AFAIK. if you use Power Service you should be fine as the bottle states it's compatible with up to B20

what B% are you seeing other than the 6-20 stickers?

McDonald - Shell
Allen Rd near the Walmart
Sign says no bio-diesel

Hey guys. I just bought a 2010 Jetta TDI last week. I bought it in Atlanta and did not have any issues finding diesel on the trip back up to Peoria. However, I tried to fill up today and only saw the "This diesel contains between 5% and 20%." Asked the attendant and he pointed me to the Shell on Allen Rd in Peoria. I just hope it doesn't gel up on me in these subzero temps...
welcome to the club! must have been a good drive through the hills! Illinois is so flat. I hope you didn't use cruise control all the way from Atlanta ;)
http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=252501

IIRC, Shell does not sell biodiesel in Illinois... or if they do it's only B5... I think BP is the same (unless it is not a BP branded with AM/PM)

if it's a high volume station they will have fresh diesel and it should have the right amount of anti-gel for the average temperatures this time of the "winter diesel season"

IIRC, unwinterized diesel (with no bio) gels around ~15F

FWIW I went through the whole 07/08 winter on nothing but Shell and I only put anti-gel in it when the weather forecast had the daily low temperatures dipping below their averages. basically only when I knew a "cold snap" was on the way and some stations may be caught with diesel that's only good to 0F

still haven't had any gelling in my tank or filter in 3 winters and ~120,000 miles. most of that on Shell and BP. now, my pickle jar with B99 in it... started clouding up around 32F... it's jelled solid like pudding now :D

other common sense on gelling would be that if you are traveling any distance North (or going into mountains): fill up when you get there. for example if you left Atlanta and topped off in, say, Nashville and made it all the way to Peoria without filling again... you might be in a bit of trouble in the morning

I'm more concerned about my 09 than gelling. I'm anxious to hear if anyone else knows about speedway and thorntons. I know Shell and BP are good sources, but none real close to me. :(

FYI...Gas City (Chicagoland) is B11 year round, with extra winter additives during the cold months. This is per corporate.

yellajacket-I posted a pic a while back of the Shell over in East Peoria, across from the casino which had a sign that says No BioDiesel on the pump.

Yes. I saw the thread as I searched for Peoria. Nice to know there is an option over here in East Peoria should I need to fuel up leaving work.

I got new tires for my 09 TDI. That's news, but doesn't belong here :p. Anyway I got rid of the Hankooks which IMO were crap, and got Continental ExtremeContact DWS from tire rack. Only had them a couple days, but the car feels more responsive as far as handling is concerned. MPG seems the same, but need more driving to say for sure.

I haven't seen too much posted for the way-the-heck-north crew ...

Murphy USA (in front of Antioch Walmart)
Approx. 475 East IL Route 173
Antioch, IL
Sticker on the pumps note: B20 (green sticker, IIRC)

Citgo (just south of the DIY spray bay car wash)
41082 North Route 83
Antioch, IL
Sticker on the pumps note: 5-20 bio blend (blue sticker)

BP Amoco (with AM/PM store)
3200 West Sand Lake Road (corner of Rt 45 and Sand Lake, next to Wendy's)
Lindenhurst, IL

If it's got an AM/PM, it's D2, right? I believe that's what my receipt said when I filled up there once. No bio-blend stickers on the pumps.

Good to know. I have a few of my branches up this way and I never know where to fuel up.

samples of the pure diesel?

Hey guys, I've moved out to Washington State, but I'd still like to get a few samples of the non-biodiesel diesel from some of those pumps sent up our lab in Milwaukee. I'm interested in how much bio is in them (remember, D975 spec allows up to 5%) and how our handheld is handling the winter blend additives some of the stations are using.

PM me if you can send a sample up.

cheers,
Kyle

Saw it yesterday (2/28/10) on the way back from my in-laws' place.

I live in Southern Illinois and it is virtually impossible to find D2 ULSD fuel, but I have found a station that sells Premium ULSD Fuel with 11% soybean bio. What other choices do you have for a 2010 Jetta TDI, I guess it's better to know exactly what your getting than just guessing.

A quick update on the fuel dispensed at the BP on Rte. 45 & Sand Lake Rd. in Lindenhurst. I just fueled up there and I saw that they now have "Biodiesel" in big, bold permanent print on the pump and a 5% to 20% blend sticker posted near the nozzle dock.

Yeah, I just filled up there today. Stunned! So much for the AM/PM = D2 theory. I was going to go in and ask when they switched and why ...but I had my little girl with me and we were running a bit late for dinner.

Not sure if this pic (taken with my phone, posted to Fb) will show up here, but here's the blue B-20 sticker on the pump and a copy of my receipt, which clearly states D2.

Updates

Greetings...

I have once again updated the master list (Post #2) to reflect all of the latest contributions.

Fifteen months after I began this thread, the members of this group have identified 64 non-bio stations in the Chicago area and 5 in downstate Illinois. Please keep those ADDITIONAL suggestions coming!

So that our information is accurate, please notify me if any stations need to be REMOVED from the list for converting to biodiesel.

I hope this list is a helpful resource to 2009/2010 TDI owners.

Thank you!

a new Shell station on Oalton Street in Evanston (just east of McCormick) has the 5 - 20% stickers on their pumps.

The (corporate with AM/PM market) BP at Sanders and Willow road just west of I-294 (Northbrook) appears to sell non-biodiesel. It has both the ULSD sticker and the bio sticker, but the word "biodiesel" has been crudely scratched off of all the bio stickers.

Nice station layout too - 2 separate diesel pumps on opposite ends.

I was in Woodstock, IL this weekend and noticed that the shell station just two blocks east of the square on Madison St. has Diesel. But they had no signage at all, not even a ULSD sticker. I went in and asked but the clerk could barely understand that Diesel was not gas.

Anyone know where they get their fuel and what may be in the tanks?

It is really aggravating to have to go inside and ask what fuel (diesel) it is at the pump since there is no proper (or any) labeling; and most of the time atendends don't know any how. I was trying to find how IL enforces labeling of the gas pumps, or where to fill complaine, with out much success.
Only link I found is text of Motor Fuel and Petroleum Standards Act http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/ilc...ctName=Motor+Fuel+and+Petroleum+Standards+Act. "

Saw it yesterday (2/28/10) on the way back from my in-laws' place.
And this past weekend (5/8/10), the sign had changed to read "Our diesel has Bio".

Oh well.

Has anyone been able to confirm this station yet? I stopped by the station today morning, but attendant on the question if it is bio-diesel answered it's diesel - so I did not get much. :( This particular location would be great since I work about a mile away from it...
Thanks

That station presently listed on the map in Des Plaines at Dee and Golf has the blue <5-20% biodiesel sticker on the pump as of last week.

The Mobil that is at 2000 South Mannheim Rd in Des Plaines ( Mannheim Rd and Howard St) has non-bio from what I was able to learn. Stopped last week. Only the green ultra-low sticker on the tanks. Asked inside, was told no bio-diesel. Very clean station both pump islands have diesel two sided pumps as their middle pumps in each island so you can pull in any lane after lining up the fuel filling side of your car with the pump lane you want to use. Still have to pay inside for the diesel. A lot of livery vehicles from O'Hare use this station for fuel and car washes.

Today I topped off (unknowing if it's bio or not, 6gl) my tank at BP at Sanders and Willow road, receiptshows D2. Asked again inside if they know for sure if it is petrol diesel or not - no clear answer .
Does anyone know if the receipt always shows the proper diesel on it?
Thanks
Tom

My guess would be that the receipt is as inaccurate as can be. I am willing to bet real money that the database for the sales of fuel are seldom updated.

Today I stopped and two stations along Milwaukee Ave..North Suburbs

1. Shell
2. 909 S MILWAUKEE AVE, VERNON HILLS, IL 60061-3193 847-955-0021
3. Diesel No. 2
4. A/M
Shell in Vernon Hills sells petrol diesel, verified by attendant/manager. She said they did try to go with bio in the past but it was no go for them. Station has nice setup, also they provide service for big trucks, buses (could be the reason why no bio) Pumps are clean, a lot of traffic on nice Saturday since they offer car wash as well. I'm going to do my next fill-up there and update....if needed. (update: receipt states Diesel - no indication what kind - so no sure what to think... price was $3.09)

1. BP
2. 490 Milwaukee Ave, Lincolnshire, IL 60069-3011 (847) 634-3223
3. ??
4. A

No marking indicating bio anywhere on the pumps, clean but small station. Attendant was not sure what type of diesel, he just stated that is is not bio. (filled up on 6/2/2010, receipt states Diesel without indication what type as well...price was $3.19).
Any thoughts how can I get better asurance than clerk response??

The Lake Forest Mobil at the Oasis at least south bound hasn't had any stickers at all on the pump for several weeks now as of last Saturday.
