The early type you can get in there by removal of the throttle flap on the intake... however you will still want to move the lock carrier into service position to get a little more room to work. That makes everything much easier.

Which is more involved due to the way they have a pipe connecting to the thermostat housing. But the 2009 CBEA *should* just have the regular type thermostat housing similar to a BRM, and the pipe instead still goes into the block directly, like the older engines.
You can see the hole in the block, though, slightly behind the alternator where the thermostat goes. This obviously has the entire front end removed, as well as the oil filter adapter (as the pipe was also getting replaced, as well as the intake manifold). So you won't have to do as much, but it gives an idea of where it is in there.
The official procedure just says remove the throttle flap, on the 2009s.
