My 04 PD is "tickier" than my ALH's
Yours doesn't sound any louder than mine, and my cam appears ok at 277k miles

But can you hear the tick in first vid compared to second? That tick is clearly gone, that rubs me the wrong way

Also I'm always listening to the sound of my TDI and for years I've heard weird sounds and investigated. This is 100% new and sounds unhealthy to me

Those 2 vids sound the same to me. It's really hard to pick up subtle sounds.
But I'll take your word for it.
How's the oil, good stuff, less than 25,000 km on it?
It's not too hard to pop the cover to have a look at the cam and stuff.

Just change oil 600 km ago. 10k intervals sometimes a hair over. Probably a good idea to check the cam quick. I need a new valve cover gasket anyway

I think all PD owners should verify cam condition just for the peace of mind:p

Yes, check your cam lobes and lifters. Do so as regular maintenance every year or so depending on mileage. If your lobes lose their chamfer and become sharp, it's time to think about cam/lifter replacement. If that happens and you time it right, you can do it when doing the timing belt -- would be easier all around.

You don't need a valve cover gasket. The rubber gasket is good for a number of removals. I have done mine 3 or 4 times in the last few years.

Here's a vid after a hard rip up to temp purring like a kitten

Wish mine blew smoke like that when I do a hard acceleration. My tuner said that a ticking/knocking sound is usually the camshaft going bad. He thinks mine is okay by the sound (didn't have time to take the valve cover off last time I was up there).
