Premature water pump failure

The water pump is leaking on our 2001 Jetta. How long do these pumps usually last? My original pump made it to the first interval fine but the replacement has failed after only 60k kms. I'm pretty sure the shop I took it to used OEM parts but the warranty is up as it was over 5 years ago.

Usually the water pumps last until the next timing belt change, but anything can happen. A pump on my 2001 Golf failed sooner than I expected. The plastic impeller broke. Be sure to use water pumps that have metal impellers.
