Hey Guys!

Howdy guys! I'm living in Grand Forks, ND and have been looking to get into the scene a little more since my life has calmed down and I'm back from my deployment and another little random 1 month trip thrown in for spice. Hopefully I can attend some GTGs and meet some people. Don't like the cold in the Midwest but I do like how friendly everyone is, quite different from the East Coast or even Colorado.

I was wondering also if someone could recommend a good mechanic to do some front brakes, some suspension and my coolant heater. I'm willing to drive as far as the twin cities to ensure that my installs are done correctly and I know that in life cheaper isn't always better. I had planned on having DeafBug do my work but couldn't get it figured out before my deployment and he's busy now and my concern is getting the parts installed before the snow flies.

I'm not opposed to doing any of it myself as long as I have supervision (brakes scare me because of the consequences) and will provide beer, etc. as long as you drink it after the bolts are tight. :)

Thanks guys!

Neiher brakes nor shocks/struts require a TDI guru, just an experienced mechanic with hopefully some European car experience. See if you can't find a local shop that's been in business for ten years or more, with a good reputation. Ask if they will install your parts, less profit for them but you control what parts are installed. Ask if they have a power bleeder, so they can do a thorough and proper job of flushing the brake fluid (it's probably time).

Even better if you can find a club member to help, but suspension work really requires the use of air tools.

Brake's and coolant heater are pretty easy to do. I have done a bunch of those. I haven't install struts yet, but I have to them on my Jetta soon.

Sounds like that could be KomarekTDI, but I can't remember what wheels he was running.

Hey everyone, we had CEL light come on for ECT sensor & glow plug circ. a- fixed both & broke a glow plug along the way (original glow plugs at 106K miles I believe) but used extractor and got it out. The 98 TDI beetle is still dogging anything after 3k rpm and we unplugged the MAF and it had more power but horrible mileage- can the MAF be bad and not through a CEL? because it's not on, or is it just that the intake/cooler, etc. has probably never been cleaned I'm guessing (just bought the car 1 week ago). Did spray clean maf sensor w/ spray stuff out of car earlier this week.

You pay for the fuel and trailer rental, I'll pull it down to Jason's for you. DB is our local guru, but will let him field what he will and won't get into.

MAF won't throw a CEL if I understand correctly. A quick look at TDI 101 will give a better answer than I will.

GTG at My place. The invitation is always open. Saturedays usually works best. As the weather gets colder the shop does stay warm. Hoist and heat supplied by me, just get people to show up. Bring Beer and Hot chics. ok, well pop and juice is fine.

I have a skid plate here off of a beetle. Not a crashed one either. Its an OEM piece.

I ordered the Dieselgeek skidplate but haven't installed it yet. The #4 GP is throwing a CEL, too. I'd be up for a GTG, too, if people don't mind a pretty-much-total noob :)

VAG-COM EGR recalibration help

I'm gearing up for my first oil change on my 06 Jetta this week (which I'm doing myself). Which got me thinking about something else I've been meaning to ask about, VAG-COM related.

Is there anybody in the Twin Cities area that is willing to help me out with an EGR recalibration? This being my first diesel, the idea of never having to clean my intake injectors certainly appeals to me. I don't have a VAG-COM, but I do have beer.

Anyone that's willing to help can PM me.

the vag-com calibration won't do much. you need software tuning (ie, a "chip") to delete the EGR from functioning, then you can remove the hardware guts if you want

What you want to avoid is EGR and intake clogging -- the EGR mod has nothing to do with the injectors.

Unfortunately you cannot adjust EGR operation with VAG-COM on those models with the PD engine (2004 and later). If you get your Jetta chipped -- RocketChip and probably Alligator -- then the EGR can be modified.

Thanks for the info TR and Bpod. So much to learn here. I hope to be getting the hang of things.

Looking for the GTG

But I learn why I couldn't do the EGR mod on my PD! What great club, see some of you at the GTG!

Wow, that's pretty bad, makes me wonder what mine's like at 120K miles. I did have someone turn the EGR duty cycle down at my first Minn GTG at newguys.

Anybody Know a trusted TDi mechanic in this state? There are none listed in the trusted Mech list. DeafBug has been removed and he really only specialised in TB as I understood it. Do the folks at VWMan or GoodKarma have a good diesel mech? Any dealers' tech better than others?

30k miles of being chipped, however, i don't think it's overfueling much at all, because i really would have to wail on it to get it to smoke. also, under heavy acceleration, EGR is off anyway. here's what i have now. wish i had done this in the first place:

egr is blocked off on top of the egr cooler as well and will soon be removed.

The pickup truck tows the camper most of the time now... because it's the one with the state park sticker!

The Passat has been awesome! I'd love to get a 2nd one now that I sold my Jetta... I did just have it in at West Side for a LOF and a few other things. (I have a 50% of LOF for life on this car - so I can't buy the oil for less than they do it for!!)

The EGR valve was replaced on her car at just under 30K miles - it was pretty clogged up!

Her rental car was a Suzuki something or other and all I can say is she was VERY happy to have her Passat back!
