Yes, I agree, to do the job correctly this isn't the way to do it. But if he is only changing the pump, this might work. He can remove the belt if he is concerned getting coolant on it. I wouldn't worry about coolant getting on it though, just rinse it off with some water OR pull the belt off but make sure to install it so it rotates in the same direction as before.

ended up buying the kit spen 325$ from roseland technical services and booked in to my actual mechanic next friday for 200 cash to get it done.!!! why cheap out and do it the wrong way and totally pouch it.

I still think that's low. I've done the job before on my '04 and it is much quicker than a ALH but still for that mechanic to make money for his time, he must be cutting corners. Just my 2 cents.

ProDemands book time is 4.4hrs plus 0.2hrs for timing belt and water pump. For $200 this guy is a legend!!

His shop is xgm auto in Hamilton. Most honest mechanic ive met in 10 years . His name is pat hes a owner operator. A good size shop has 4 hoists
Only mechanic iver seen also with 20 reviews and maintains a 5/5star review. He said between 200-250 id get him to 200 ......... also just bought a 2003 alh tdi 5 spd sedan zero rust has just under /@ 200k km this is beautiful only 3300. Getting it tomorrow morning. I passed on the POS 1000 tdi in cambridge wasnt worth the time and hassle

Hourly on the job paid by a card with reciept is like 85/90 cash on the side is like 65/hr
