My wife flipped our Jetta wagon into the ditch today. I just got back from the body shop. A preliminary look is not pretty. Shop manager said "if it's not totalled, it will be very close". His eyeball guess is at least $10k in damage. At a glance:
Rear suspension trashed (right rear wheel is bent to a cockeyed angle)
Front suspension trashed
Flat tire bent wheel
Rad support ruined
Entire front end: bumper, grille, hood
Entire right side of car from front to rear bumper
Roof
Windscreen
are all badly damaged. No airbags though. Luckily, nobody hurt. But I am some pissed. Last August I was hit by a tailgater in our Passat, which inflicted $5000 damage. With no-fault insurance and two heavy claims, we're likely to see a major rise in premiums.
The only good news is that I have replacement cost insurance on the car, so I actually hope they total it, better that than dealing with a seriously rebuilt wreck. But a new wagon is not likely to be findable. So I have it narrowed down to an '06 Jetta TDI or an '07 base Passat wagon (yes, gasser). WITH ESP THIS TIME. They have a used '04 base Jetta wagon on the lot, but since I've paid for replacement cost, why settle for a used car?
Anyway, RIP to a fine Jetta that was 100% trouble-free other than the driver-inflicted wounds.
