We are changing chat servers!

Please reconfigure your IRC client to use chat.freenode.net. Port 6667 for plain-text or 7000 for SSL. We'll be in ##tdiclub.

For web chat, go to this URL: http://webchat.freenode.net?channels=%23%23tdiclub

For people who use an IRC client, please configure it to connect to Freenode (instructions). We'll be in ##tdiclub. Note that there are two hash marks before tdiclub.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

You may or may not know, but there is a chat room here! It's easy to use, but here are a few pointers:

After navigating to the page with the chat room, http://tdiclub.com/chat , you're presented with a JavaScript warning, asking if you want to run JIRC. Say yes. This is the software that lets you get into the chat room. After that, you're presented with this:

Here is where people make their first mistake. See where it says TDIClub_Guest? That's the 'nickname' or screen name you'll use in the chat room. Its important that you change this to something different. When 3 people come into the room and have that default nickname, it can get really confusing. So, we'll enter a name. It does not have to be the same name that you use on the forums, but if you have a screen name here, please use the same one.

Then click Connect Now! on the bottom:

And you're in! It's that simple. To use the JIRC interface, simply type into the box at the bottom and press return.

You can also make the text bold by clicking the B button, or change its color by clicking on the colors to the right. After the message is sent, the color goes back to black.

If you want to private message someone in the room, double click their name on the right, and you'll get a new window:

This next image shows 2 things people tend to do wrong:

ALL CAPS IS BAD. :) And we'll gladly help you, but stick around and chat a while. It's nice to be thought of as more then a tech support guy. Popup blockers do not work well with the JIRC software. If you want to click a link that was pasted into the chat room, you have to turn it off, or it will boot you from the room. Holding control when you click the link generally works.

If you want to come back more often, I'd recommend you get better software. TDIClub chat is a room on the Wastelands IRC server, so you can get at it from any standard IRC client. The server is irc.wasteland.org and the room is #tdiclubchat

There is an alternate Java client, available here: http://www.pinchotriders.com/tdiclub/

I'de also like to note that discussions do not have to be TDI related. It could be said that the chat room is the last general discussion area here.

Umm, I'll admit, I'm guilty of the talk and run thing...

Anyway, here's a list of IRC clients that are popular:

mIRC - http://www.mirc.com/
Runs on: Windows
Cost: 30 day trial, costs $20 afterwards

XChat - http://www.xchat.org/
Runs on: Windows, Mac OS, Linux
Cost: Free ("open source", if you know what that is)

Ircle - http://www.ircle.com/
Runs on: Mac OS
Cost: 30 day trial, costs 19 euros or $23 afterwards

XiRCON - http://www.xircon.com/
Runs on: Windows
Cost: Free

Trillian - http://www.ceruleanstudios.com/
Runs on: Windows
Cost: Free
Notes: This program is also an instant messaging program, but it has IRC functionality

ChatZilla - http://www.mozilla.org/projects/rt-messaging/chatzilla/
Runs on: Windows, Mac OS, Linux, and others
Cost: Free (open source)
Notes: This program requires Firefox, Mozilla, Netscape, or another "Gecko-based" browser

Opera - http://www.opera.com/
Runs on: Windows, Mac OS, Linux, and others
Cost: Free
Notes: This program is also a web browser

I personally use Opera (for everything, not just IRC), but the IRC client could use more features, in my opinion... An upside is that, compared to some of the ones on my list, it's relatively easy to use.

If you've already got mIRC, or you are viewing this page in Opera (other programs may work, I haven't tried), this link will get you into the chat without setting much up: irc://irc.icq.com/tdiclubchat

In case you missed it from the above posts, the chat room server is irc.wasteland.org and channel #tdiclubchat.

As far as clients go, I prefer irssi, a free/open source command-line client available for most flavors of linux - Slackware, Red Hat|Fedora, Gentoo, Debian|Ubuntu, Mandrake, Net|Free|OpenBSD, OS X (via DarwinPorts) - and allegedly on Windows via Cygwin. Amiga, Commodore 64 and TRS-80 support has not been announced.

Drop in and say "Hi" sometime.

compu, the spacing was destroyed when you edited the top post.

Just a reminder, when the site goes down, you will still be able to access TDIClub Chat by using an IRC client. http://tdiclub.com/chat will not work, however.

I haven't been able to access TDICluB Chat since getting rid of Windows ME and loading XP Professional. Never used chat much but it was good to go there once in a while to do a "real time" troubleshoot on some problem or other.

Here's what I see now:

I guess I have some security level set too high or something. Suggestions to fix this welcomed!

We're mostly friendly folks, now with cleaner language! 90% less sailors embarrassed with a minty-clean lingering aftertaste to boot.

Jared set the mode for Invite Only. Not sure whether it was an accident or some sort of cruel joke. Also, the ICQ servers seem to be struggling recently. There have been lots of server splits and userlist issues in the past couple of days.

All seems to be working well now though.

NEW TDIclub Chat Room servers!

NEW TDIclub Chat Room servers!

irc.wasteland.org

room is still #tdiclubchat

That's right, we got fed up with ICQ's crappy service and 8 hour-long server splits. This should be more reliable than anything we've had in the past.

The Java Applet will be changed soon. Sorry for the inconvenience... In the mean time, download a copy of mIRC, Trillian, or any of the other IRC programs available.

That applet should work fine on both OSes, as long as you've got the Java Virtual Machine installed.

However, you can also use an IRC client... there's a few for OS X, none of which I like. Ubuntu comes with Pidgin (well, last time I used a desktop version of Ubuntu, it was GAIM, but...) which has IRC functionality, and there are other IRC clients in the repositories. Actually, the screenshot immediately above your post is from GAIM in Ubuntu. ;)

We need a little more information about your setup first.

What info do you need? I'm a tech user, not tech generally tech support so if you could help me out I'd appreciate it very much.

EDIT:
Looks like this must just be a Java problem on both my computer's at home, because it's working fine here at the office. Any suggestions for things I might need to install, or is there a "Chat How-To"?
