594.1 miles / 13.752 gallons = 43.20 mpg.

$2.739 for Premium B5.

I didn't realize that the tire shop had only put 30 psi in my tires. I bumped them up to 50psi for the last 200 miles. I'm hoping the next tank will be a little better.

Less driving for mileage, studded snow tires, a week at ~0F all probably contributed to reduced mileage - not to mention the Winterized B2. Noticed exhaust is more farty sounding now and car has generally less power. Wish I had a boost gauge, maybe VNT mechanism getting sticky?

~275 miles pulling ~700 lb trailer at ~75 indicated MPH in slush/snow etc, ~15 full throttle runs to 85-90 MPH to pass. Remaining miles ~75 MPH indicated return trip. Used hand vacuum pump to cycle VNT mechanism, all felt smooth. Exhaust whistle came back and so did power after that, but farty exhaust and low power is back again.

Not holding out much hope for good mileage again until I can take off the studded snow tires, stop driving through all the slop/snow, and things warm up again (Probably April)

MPG 50.21

This is the first time I've run Shell Rotella T Synthetic 5w-40.... A noticeable improvement in MPG right off the get go. I'm guessing about 2 to 3 % increase in MPG.
I really think the summer blend fuel here that comes out around August is high calorie fuel. The Flying J brand stuff had a really syrup brown color to the fuel, and was good quality stuff. Not the clear watery fuel or the Chartreuse green no foam fuel thats been severly hydrotreated to get the sulfur content down to 15ppm

Next tank should again yield 50 or better mpg, but that might be January before I fill up again.

Usual stuff... 65mph indicated, 62 actual, coasting down hills where safe or practical, no drafting of big rigs, I just bought a brand new windscreen, the last one took a rock. Tires aired to 32 psi. Added Note: Most all of this tank was run with cooler temperatures and relatively high relative humidity, about 55 to 80% with an onshore fog/flow, as was Ernies 790 mile trip to Fresno, CA... if it matters to those that count for elements to economy in mpg.

I am a firm believer that the quality of the ULSD fuel we are getting here in tropical Southern CA is of a good grade and a quite high cetane rating from the major suppliers.

Here's a little bit of backround about BP/Arco's ULSD development here in CA... 60 Cetane rating!!!!

http://www.eia.doe.gov/oiaf/servicerpt/ulsd/chapter3.html

and a clip from the above...

In 1999 Arco announced that it would produce a premium diesel fuel— which Arco termed “EC Diesel”—at its Carson, California, refinery.50 EC Diesel is a “super clean” diesel designed to meet the needs of fleets and buses in urban areas. The reported quality attributes include less than 10 ppm sulfur, less than 10 percent aromatics, and 60 cetane, among others.51 Arco indicated that the crude slates of the Carson refinery would remain unchanged, with only the operating conditions modified. The refinery had to selectively take out a sulfurous, aromatic cycle oil feed stream to the diesel unit and repeat this every few days for batches. If continuous production were required, a major capital investment would have to be made. In April 2000, Equilon also announced that its Martinez refinery in Northern California could provide ULSD for fleet use in that region of the State.52
The challenge of producing ULSD from feedstocks that are difficult to desulfurize is well represented by the experience of Lyondell-Citgo Refining (LCR) at its refinery in Houston, Texas. In 1997 the refinery moved to a diet of 100 percent Venezuelan crude.53 The gravity of the crude oil was less than 20 oAPI, and it was highly aromatic. To produce suitable quality low-sulfur diesel product the refinery had revamped a hydrotreater to SynSat operation in 1996 and then converted to SynShift in 1998. The revamped hydrotreater has a capacity of 50,000 barrels per day and consists of a first-stage reactor operating at 675 psig pressure, a high-pressure stripper, and a second-stage reactor that uses a noble metal catalyst. The feed to the unit is a blend of light cycle oil (LCO), coker distillate, and straight-run distillate (approximately equal volumes) with 1.4 percent sulfur by weight, 70 percent aromatics, and a cetane number of 30. The product has about 40 percent aromatics, a cetane number of 38.5, and sulfur content less than 140 ppm.
Citgo reported that the LCR hydrotreating unit was the largest reactor of its type when installed in 1996 and that the volume of catalyst in the unit, which had been 40,000 pounds in the old unit, had increased to 1.7 million pounds in the revamped unit. The diesel sulfur level produced in the unit reportedly met the 15 ppm sulfur cap at initial conditions at start of run, but as the desulfurization catalyst aged, the reactor temperature had to be revised to achieve target sulfur levels. If the revamped unit had to consistently meet a 15 ppm diesel sulfur limit, the cycle life could be greatly reduced from current operation, causing frequent catalyst replacement and more frequent shutdowns. Under the current mode of operation, the frequency of catalyst changeout is managed by reducing the cracked stocks in the feed to the unit. More frequent catalyst changeouts to meet a 15 ppm sulfur cap reportedly could raise the cost of diesel production.54

I have two to report:

Driver: Ernie Rogers

Miles: 240.0
Gallons: 4.145 ---> 57.9 mpg (Local driving)

Miles: 790.5
Gallons: 12.88 ---> 61.4 mpg (Pl. Grove, UT to Fresno, 62 mph)

Model Year: 2003
Model: Beetle
Tranny: 5M
Fuel type: B2

+ Wing, Michelin 205/60R-16 S2 at 40 psi, Oil-Motul 0W30, gentle foot

Side note: I delivered some of my "special fuel"--Phillips from the Utah refinery-- to Audi5000 today. The jugs had leaked a few drops through the seals, too little to notice. He put the cans in the car and we went in Carl's Jr. for food. Afterward, he opened his car door, staggered back gasping, and pronounced that Phillips (winter mix) as the worst fuel he had ever smelled. I drove on to finish my trip to Fresno, leaving him with all his car doors open and hoping for wind. :p

All I can say is I almost blew chunks with all the additives/aromatics in the Phillips 66 that Ernie has been using. He also mentioned it has a stinky exhaust odor also... something that all the ULSD here in CA is pleasantly missing . My containers were designed to hold the vapor pressure of soy vegetable oil, I fear all the additives that boost mpg will drift off into the atmosphere as unburnt hydrocarbons instead of into my 205 nozzles where they will be properly oxidized into energy.

I need an Organics Chemistry lesson book to study some more.

All I can say Ernie is this stuff better be good and worth the stink and gut wrenching I went through... the proof will be in the MPGs. I need some info from you on PowerService Gray you add, the ratio. I'm hoping for 52mpg in my Passat.

definitly think that my lack of practice filling my tank post ventectomy led to my earlier low fuel milage. Because this tank had the same amount of city driving and included some driving at 110 mph *dont ask, with much better numbers.

That's next! ;) I might cut this oil change off at 5K instead of 10K to do just that. (Knowing me, though, I'll be too lazy to do so and run it to 10K anyway.)

Car still breaking in, not being particularly careful with economy, just turned 1300 total miles. Put in B35 this time, see what happens.

Hi, Randy,

Remember, my test report didn't show any mileage improvement for either biodiesel or Power Service when added to ULSD.

I follow the recommendation on the bottle at one bottle to 50 gallons-- usally add 4 oz. with 12-13 gallons of my stinky, low-Cetane Phillips.

Well, apparently I found the right person to sleep with. :D

Total for the month: 26.022 gals, 1257 mi, 48.305MPG

BTW, I finally found out the range of problems I have.

Probable leaky fuel injector, according to the shop that just looked at it before the weekend. This sounds likely given the truly astonishing amount of smoke the thing blows on a cold (i.e, sitting overnight) start. Perfect excuse to hit up Charlie. :D

VERY retarded timing, per VAG-COM. Measuring blocks gives mid-to-high 40s at 110-115 temp, but Basic Settings gives 0-1. I can only conclude that the timing is WAY wacked. Funny, though...it did this after the timing belt change and both before and after the injection pump replacement (two different highly recommended shops). Doesn't anybody check timing?

Also I got my first-ever MIL today, which turned out to be an intermittent Glow Plug #3 electrical fault. Hmmm...dielectric grease or a new harness for me, it sounds like.

It goes in for timing check/change tomorrow night, then we'll see about the glow plug harness after that.

And there is the winter drop. I do wonder how much of this is from driving through 4-6 inch snow and 50% snow packed roads on the Hakka Q's. Not to mention rarely warming up.
