You probably need to sleep with the goddess D2. your b99 might not have enough kick to break the mpg barrier you seek.

No one running greater than B 20 broke 47 last month.
That's the one mistress I won't sleep with to do it.

My shiny new injection pump has known nothing but B99, and I want to keep it that way. No sulfur to swell my seals, you see. ;)

LOL, I hope I don't drive like a granny, but I did freeze on the way home last night ;) I admit my daily commute is 10 miles, no stops on a 35mph road.

I did not think I could crack 50 this early. These TDIs are outstanding. I knew I had a good tank going and will be traveling to VA through DC traffic next week which will murder my good mileage so I decided to cash in and fillup and see what the results were. It has been very cold here too. I cannot wait for summer to see how high we can go.

Geez, these Golf and NewBea's are busting my balls... I may have to take the plunge and drive 55mph in the truck lane on another Flyfishing trip. I think the old 1996 B4 Passat needs some love in the MPG dept. Switched over to some 5w40 Synthetic this oil change, maybe that will help out a little bit from the 15 w-40 Delo 400 I run in the summer here in S Calif. I may have to start taping up the grill this winter with cardboard for better cd's. Anybody got a bottom pan and clips for a B4 for sale?

Record cold temps in Coloroado the past week with low between -10 and -15 F. (-23 to -26 C) means running all the power hungry heating circuits and lights. This tank had 80% city, 20% highway while driving in snow. Tires: Michelin PA2 (snow)

Hard to break 50 for me but most of this was at 75+ MPH, Wisconsin to NC with retarded timing. 2 People + Luggage and dog made me around 3400 pounds too.

I was really good about using GDRs driving techiniques on this Tank. Shift at 2 to 2.25k rpm, deep throttle, accelerate moderately briskly to get into 5th gear, 5th gear at 40 to 45mph when allowed, etc.

I thought by the gauge that I was going to break 50mpg on this, but then I was on the freeway when a black A4 Jetta with 18"rims blew by me at 90 mph... I thought it said TDI, so I stepped into it to catch him. I was at 95 to 98 indicated just to catch up to him on a 5 lane each way interstate. We went back and forth for about 20 measured miles at 80 to 95 most of the way when he went South on I-5 and I went South I-405. I talked with Ernie about this, and based on his program and the speeds I was traveling, I probably sucked 2/3 of a gallon of brew to do 20 miles, which if I had stayed with my 62mph actual, would have netted me the 50mpg I was so desperately trying for. I should explain that here in Southern California, with diesels being banned since 2004, seeing a TDI on our roads is a very rare sight, and needs to be pursued with vigor. :D

About 95% freeway, 5% city, plus 20 miles going too fast and messing up my mileage. All of this was on Delo 400 15w-40 Petroleum based oil. I did an oil and filter and filled up with Rotella T 5w-40 Synthetic Friday night, So I refueled to see where the 5 weight oil goes . This will be the last of the pre hurricane Rita Summer Grade diesel from Flying J with B-5 and Grey Power Service, 3 oz per 10 gallons. Enought for 1 test with the 5w-40 synthetic.

Next batch will be??? to be continued, once Ernie Rogers gets me a 12 gallon sample of Phillips Winterized D2 from Salt Lake City. I'm hoping it's as good as he says it tests in his New Beetle.

Is it possible to include whose brand fuel you are using (not the vendor, but where the crude came from?) in your posts?

Next test

58.3 mpUSg

The cold weather is here, it drops to -2 degC (28 degF) in Vancouver overnight, so that is affecting mpg's because the cold start penalty is greater. Takes a greater distance for the engine to warm up.

Well, 0 degrees F and a slipping/pushing through a few inches of snow will make me go down to 43.7mpg

It's -19C here right now...getting colder.

I'll try to keep numbers above 50 mpg, it's really hard though...

My lifetime average is now 50.045 mpg.

Will Lug Nut be first this month...I don't think so.

1st and (likely) last entry for Dec.

My Biodiesel ratio chased the tempratures down last week, but the net result is as follows:
Total Fuel : 21.9 Gallons
Total Miles: 917.3
------------------
Total Mileage: 41.9 mpg (at ~ 58%Bio, 28%K1, 15%Winterized D2)
For the bloody details, I started at B75/K25. About 440 miles into the tank, I added 2.5g K1 (B55/45%K1). 80 odd miles later, I added 4g of winterized d2 (~B36) which stayed liquid despite the single digit highs and ~ -10F nights (though I have an unheated, detatched garage).

May I make a request? Can we have a few more categories, for example best PD Jetta Wagon? That way I have at least some chance of winning and making my "granny driving while freezing to death because the car doesn't warm up doing 1300rpm" worth the effort!
I'm voting for a 'top PD Jetta Wagon running as much Biodiesel as reasonable without a ton of effort' category. If I have to, I'll start adding modifiers (Blue, GL, 15" wheels, etc.) till I win :)

I'm baaack...

7Dec05:

23.608 gal
1451.5 miles
61.48 mpg

The above includes 2 intermediate partial fills, 40 days of suburban driving, a timing belt change and the beginning of using the 0.681 5th. It was basically all of November (I didn't have anything to post for the November competition)

11Dec05

5.531 gal
364.1 miles
65.83 mpg

That tank was 75% rural at 1600 rpm and 54 mph, the rest suburban. I had hoped for a bit better what with the 0.681 5th and a low cruise speed...oh well

Poor Watercop, he has such a struggle

My composite performance for December so far:

Driver: Ernie Rogers
Miles: 1437.9
Gallons: 24.6 ---> 58.45 mpg
Model Year: 2003
Model: Beetle
Tranny: M5
Fuel type: B5, more or less

The fuel tests I did interfered with normal "fill the tank and calculate." I did close the chapter last night by filling the tank after spending the afternoon testing fuel and additive combinations. (See report in this forum.) My miles this month have been about 70% highway at 62mph.

The ELF CRV did everything in its power to combat the 0-10 degree temps we have had in the last few weeks. Tough to get good mileage when your car doesn't warm up after 20 miles of driving.

On Dec 13 early morning warm up, then 10ish miles of around town in traffic, and then a 475 mile run straight from RI to Buffalo for business with 2 highway lunch/break stops. 47 mpg. I ran at about 72-73 mph the whole way, basically trying to keep the tach under 2500 rpm as I've noticed the mileage drops drastically when I'm pushing it to 80 mph and above. Drafted some trucks when possible on I-90. Thule roof racks still on the car, didn't remove them. I was happy with this result as I'm usually not patient enough to keep it around 70 and end up only getting 40 mpg when I'm lead footing it.
