Just getting your opinion. I was shocked  at first when my Co-worker
said she had VW's 80K service done at Firestone. She has a 2007 Jetta
gas engine, DAG. As bad as VW dealers can screw maintenance up, I
thought why not Firestone.

I have done two DSG services. If I can do it why not. Of course I am anal
and spend way too much time with the details, but it's a hobby for me.

You need a Ross Tech cable to measure trans temp, but many people on
these here forums have used different methods (infrared Temp or volume
method) to add fluid. It's not rocket science. The odd part is the stand
pipe and shoving fluid up and in the bottom of the transmission. Love the
Germans, let's make it hard to discourage people from doing it their selves?

You need the tool, which is no big deal for a Professional mechanic to buy.
Maybe the shop had one or they used the fill from filter method?

I am suspicious, so I told them to check their paperwork and see what
they charged, and assure they bought VW fluids and filter (Mann or what
ever brand). COMMENTS?

I wouldn't trust firestone to put air in my tires :)
I agree. A friend had car trouble years ago, and he took his car to Firestone.

They said that the transmission was bad. They wanted to replace the transmission and quoted a price.

The friend asked me what to do, and we took it somewhere for a second opinion.

We went to a transmission shop and went out with the owner for a test drive. His diagnosis: "I don't know what it is. I can tell you one thing. It is not the transmission. I think the car isn't breathing. Take the car to this garage up the street, and ask them to back off the exhaust manifold."

My friend did. It was a collapsed catalytic converter.

Her car is probably a tiptronic so it's a little different. My local Firestone does a great job. The manager was telling me that they were the first store opened or something like that. They're always busy. You have to show up at 6 am just to get in line.

There are just too many to list....
Please don't use the word "Tiptronic". They are ALL Tip

The 2007 Jetta could have an 02E (DSG) trans if it has the 2.0L FSI (BPY code) gasser engine, or the 09G (Aisin) box if it has one of the 5 cylinder gas engines. Both are automatics, both have 6 speeds, both have Tiptronic. They use a different ATF however, and on the 09G there is no "published" PM service. However experience has shown us that it will get new ATF when the valve body decides to start spazzing out.

Also, just in case anyone is keeping score, most automatics nowadays are filled like this, ATF dispticks have gone the way of the dodo. This is not a "German" thing.

The Tiguans that I had both said Tiptronic. My JSW says DSG.

Go look at your Jetta's Monroney tag and tell me what it says. ;)

(you can even go to Volkswagen's website and "build" a car too).

"6-speed DSG® automatic transmission with Tiptronic® and Sport mode"

Or on non-DSG cars: "6-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic® and Sport mode"

T'reg: "8-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic® and Sport mode"

Notice the word "Tiptronic" in all of them? Yet they all have a different transmission. So you see, the word "Tiptronic" just means it is missing a pedal.
