Does VW use something special for powersteering fluid, or can I use something generic from the autoparts store ?

The OP doesn't state which car he is adding power steering fluid to. It makes a difference.

For the 2015, look for Pentosin CHF 202 white can. Pentosin is not really generic but it is readily available at NAPA and costs less than VW's product. 202 is 100% synthetic oil as is the equivalent spec VW product.Pentosin CHF 202.jpg

For the 2000 one can use Pentosin CHF 11S green can. Read the link in the second post. It explains a lot about 202. To add what I know, 202 is for VWs 2005+.

11S is NOT synthetic based. 11S is a highly refined and purified mineral oil.

202 is backwards compatible to all VW power steering systems. This means 202 can be added to a system that has 11S in it. Do NOT add 11S to a newer VW that has 202 in it.

A4 chassis cars can use basically any synthetic ATF in the power steering
mine's been in there for the last 6 years and 60-70k miles, and it is still nice bright red as compared to the CHF that had drained out dark brown rather than the nice bright green that it comes as
