Well I finally signed up so I can post, I have been reading a lot here and have learned a ton, thank you to everyone who has contributed. I am I’m the process of getting the wiring done with an ALH engine in an 89 Toyota. The many good posts here, my Bentley manual, and the Haynes manual all day ndicate there should be a purple/white wire from pin 42 on the ecu to the glow plug relay. There is not a wire in pin 42 and no purple/white on the relay. It is an 03 Jetta that my brother drove for a few years before it got totaled, I know the glow plugs were working and I didn’t take any wires out of the ecu plug. I’m kind of at a loss. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

I think you may be looking at diagram 32 on pages 97-298 to 97-310. This is for an older version of ECU.

Check diagram 65 on pages 97-673 to 97-685.

That would be amazing if it was that simple, I have spent hours researching this. I’ll have my son check now or check when I get home from work.
Thank you.

There are technically six different versions of the ALH for the North America region:

1 - 1997 to 1999 with the 80 pin ECU
2 - 2000 to 2001 with the 121 pin ECU and "two wire" glow plug system
3 - 2002 to 2003 with the 121 pin ECU and "four wire" glow plug system

and a manual and automatic version of each.
