Greetings,

2000 Jetta TDI 5-spd with 236,xxx miles
Last timing belt at 180,xxx miles
Last fuel filter changed at 219,xxx miles [last May]

The car will start quickly and run as long as you want it to, but if you shut it off and try to restart it within 5-8 minutes, it ain't gonna happen.

If you wait 10 minutes, it'll start right up.

The engine doesn't have to be warm, either. I can go out in the morning, start it, let it run of 20 seconds and shut it off. It won't re-start for another 10 minutes.

I checked the anti-shutter valve, and it seems okay.

I can see a tiny air bubble in the clear fuel hose when it's off. When cranking, the bubble disappears.

I even hooked-the battery to a charger... no change.

Normally, car is started, driven 40-45 miles to school, then shut down for at least a couple hours. Problem wasn't discovered until the car was driven to a quicky-mart a couple days ago.

The problem is quite repeatable.

Any ideas? Spring Break is almost over. I don't want my son stranded 40 miles away, near a bunch of college women, with nothing to do :D

So is engine cranking over with the starter?

When it does not start, does the glow plug light blink on for a sec when key is first turned on to run position?

When you fiddled with the asv, did you rotate little lever and note that it springs back to open position?

Yes. It'll crank just fine

When it does not start, does the glow plug light blink on for a sec when key is first turned on to run position?
I thought so...
But, I just went out to verify, and the glow plug light didn't come on...
and the car won't start.
I tried many times

When you fiddled with the asv, did you rotate little lever and note that it springs back to open position?
Yes, the ASV appears to be functioning properly.

<blush>
It looks like I may be the victim of a dead 109.
I'm going to borrow the 109 from the Beetle and see what happens.

... always keep at least one spare TDI around... ;)

I am *so* sorry to bother everyone.

The 109 from the Beetle enables the Jetta to start... and rather quickly, i might add

FYI, the 109 in the Jetta is black. The one in the Beetle is white... with VW logo and "109" on the top. I've never heard of a white one.

Thanks for the hint "Ski in NC"
