Manual Gear Shift Position

I have an 05 Golf TDI 5 speed that I just bought a week ago. I noticed that when I shift to 5th gear the car goes into gear fine and then the shift lever seems to adjust about a 1/4 inch to the left. I did not notice any movement in the lever on my 2000 NB that I just sold. My questions are a) is this my imagination? b) is this normal? c) is this maybe an overdrive position? d)is there too much play in the shift lever? e) am I just anal and need to find something to worry about?

Thanks for that info, I will store it for future reference. Somehow I am not inclined to start "modding" a 10 day old car, at least not yet.
