Re-posting from what has become my build thread so that others can see this topic.

Editing to make this clear: you need VCDS to activate the RVC feature of your NAV unit.

Installed the back-up camera from a Passat B7 last night. Bought the wire harness and camera/handle from two members on VWVortex (Verebs1 and Jettsy respectively).

Camera is built-in to the trunk release handle and swaps out for the original with ease. The fun is routing it from the trunk to the Nav unit. RNS-315 and RNS-510 have the controller built-in (only EU-spec RCD-510 is compatible), just need to activate with VCDS.

The harness that Verebs1 is selling is wrapped nice like an OE product would be, comes with the wire-tap that you need to get signal from the reverse light, fuse that you need to add to the fuse box, and zip ties. His harness also installs in a more professional manner IMO. You tie into the ground and reverse signal inside the cabin in a good, hidden spot and you actually add the power wire to the back of the fuse panel and install the fuse in an open slot - no add-a-fuse. This method does, though, require that you take more of the car apart to get access to things and properly run the harness with the main harness from the trunk.

Total time, because of all the disassembly and reassembly needed: 5 hours. Someone with more experience doing this could do it quicker, but I took my time to take things apart slowly and understand what I was doing. Verebs1 did also supply a PDF that was useful for taking things apart (like the rear seat bench). I also took some extra time routing the harness and zip tying it to other harnesses to keep it out of the way and make it look like it may have been stock.

Other camera sources (Jettsy's price was best):

Other harness source (Verebs1 was a bit more):

The whole kit might work, but I'm not sure about the harness:

Not all RCD-510 have video capability. You can confirm whether yours has it by pulling your radio and looking for a 26-pin connector on the back. I'm told that no US-spec RCD-510 have this connector and that it is hard to find even outside of the US.

For reference, it is the "Multi-pin connector 5" on this illustration:

I found two RCD-510 radios in China that have the 26-bin video connector.

Two in China that don't have pictures of the rear, but have a picture of the unit in RVC mode.

Another in Taiwan (which is/isn't China)

Do note the warning about AM/FM tuning on these non-US radios.

If anyone is questioning the usefulness of a RVC, I will say that it is extremely useful to have for parallel parking and backing into a parking spot. There are yellow lines displayed on the screen that essentially represent the width of the car. Center those between the lines of the parking spot and you're good... If you're trying to squeeze into a tight parallel spot, it will help you get nice and close to the car behind you.

I don't really use it going out of my driveway. I'll glance at it sometimes, but I'm in a quiet neighborhood and know where my kid is at all times (usually).

Those projected lines require the additional control module that pretty much doubles the cost and time involved with adding the RVC system.

I just need VCDS to activated it in the passat, I installed it two weeks ago. it was around $220 all said and done.

The Projected lines are stationary... but there... for the ones synced to the steering, that's another module... and I can tell you, really don't add much (I had them in my Audi A6). You use your brain more and start to not trust the lines (they used to put me too far from the curb if I used them). The Camera and stationary lines do a great job.
