Are these the same thing, or do I need a different set of bits?

You need triple square most likely.

Torx and star are different, you are more likely to run into torx than star, and most likely to run into triple square.

There are just too many to list....
This keeps coming up. Here are what the different things are:

Torx: 6 pointed

Tamper-proof Torx: 6 pointed with a round peg in the middle

Torx Plus: 6 pointed, but the points are rounded off

Tamper Proof Torx Plus: 5 pointed, points rounded off, peg in the middle (yes, they are FIVE pointed).

XZN (Triplesquare): 12 points

Allen: 6 sided hollow hex

Polydrive: 6 widely spaced rounded points (used on some head bolts).

There is no such thing (technically) as "Star".

Read all about them here:

Sears have them?
AutoZone may have a set... I don't think Harbor Freight does... MetalNerd has excellent quality ones (as usual...) Probably most auto parts stores have something... (Lisle makes some...) Then there's always Snap-On... (I still have mine from way back when I needed it for my Type-III and Type-IV air-cooled VWs...)

They arent THAT unusual. Just call up the local independent parts store and ask them for 8mm Triple Square bits. You will probably need a short extension and a universal/wobbly adapter to get to those bolts.
