So after mucho searching on the web I found this place http://www.lima-shop.de/en/ that sells OEM alternator and starter parts.
They need the (bosch) part number to locate the correct parts.
How/where can I locate the bosch number for my alternator? Is it on the unit somewhere? The only numbers that I found are on the regulator.
This is for a 2011 Jetta TDI sportwagon.
Thanks for any help.

Indigo, thank you for the link. That is a pretty good price. The lowest I have seen is $100 more that idparts.
No core charge is a major +.
I will order that one. If the repair parts are not too high priced I will still rebuild the old one.
Thanks again for the link.

note regarding the repair parts- the website (address) looks like a German based vendor, so you might be looking at international shipping costs. That could make a big difference on core return !

No core charge. For whatever reason they will not ship complete units out of Germany.
I am only after a rebuild kit.
It still may be cost ineffective to order the parts as well.
