Hello and thanks for your interest in this post; I have a chance to buy a 2006 Jetta TDI GLS Package 2, with an automatic transmission. I am also dealing with a salesman on a 2006 Jetta TDI Package 1, manual transmission.

I'm not to fond of automatics, having never had another since my first car, a 1976 'Vette (chevette, that is). But the deal might be to good to pass up on the auto.

My question is, how does the fuel economy compare between the two transmissions? I know what the sticker says, but what about real world, real empirical evidence from Jetta owners? Pls let me know your opinions, as I will be making an offer on one of them this week.

Thanks again!

The fuel economy is basically the same for the average driver. As far as I am concerned, the main consideration between the two is cost of purchase, cost to maintain, and complexity which may affect reliability.
