Hi all,

Got problems with a newly acquired VW 2012 Jetta TDi 6-speed with "slipping" clutch when accelerating hard in 3rd or 4th gear. To me, sounded like a clutch issue.

Took them to Mister Transmission (yeah, I know...). They took it apart and the following damage appear on the transmission (see pictures). They're (obviously) telling me I need a new transmission for a whopping $1,500. Outside of the rub mark, the transmission is fine, no leaks or anything.

While I still think the clutch need replacement, I do not know however HOW the damage occurred to begin with :confused::confused:

The clutch assembly is a rather expensive set with several parts (flywheel, friction plate, pressure plate). I'm trying to find out what actually needs to be replaced. Thought I would get an opinion of my trusted peers before authorizing anything.

Thoughts?

Ok folks, so I stopped by Mister Transmission and was up for a surprise.... 2 in fact:
1/ Mister Transmission was actually right... the transmission is indeed shot;
2/ The cause of the dramatic failure is something I've never seen before. A part of the pressure plate (some sort of a metal ring) has broken off and "lifted", sticking out from it; it ground the transmission housing over time, all the way to making a hole in it (which explained the pool of oil onto the driveway, which I thought was engine oil due to its brown color). The transmission then proceeded with emptying itself into the clutch assembly, contaminating the friction plate and causing it to slip.... And there you have it, a nice worst case scenario.

Bottom line: clutch is shot, all of it, tranny has a hole in it, and is shot too. Pretty pissed at VW quite frankly, and at a problem that shouldn't have happened to begin with. Made in Mexico....

That was a bad day that set me off over CDN $3,500... And I get a used tranny for that price. :mad:

There are just too many to list....
The break does not look very common to me. Odd failure.

I would bet abuse/lack of driving skills be the previous owner as the root cause.
