Incidentally I now have over 2,000 miles since I changed it and it still runs great with no codes...

Above is a copy of the log files I collected using VCDS on my trip to tdifest and home again. Most of the time I was logging a selection of advance measuring values... About the time I got to the UP, the MIL lit up. A quick check revealed P0401 errors. I logged a couple entries, and then reset the codes, and watched as more P0401 errors show up. By Monday morning, the MIL was back, I reset, watched as the codes logged and the MIL back Thursday morning, and not again since.

You can step through the logs, and see that the obd pending and active P0401 error codes are a subset of those logged by the engine controller.

seems like the OBD monitor sees a newly logged error code as a pending code, and if the next time it is checked, if there is not a repeat, it goes away.

The fan code (006480 - Radiator Fan (V7)
P1950 - 000 - Movement Restricted / Jammed - Intermittent)
is a leftover. I replaced the large fan a couple weeks earlier, but was waiting for it to go away on its own.

I cleared the codes and watched them come back as the drives progressed.

seems like my egr filter is firmly in the semi-clogged area. Have not plotted the Basic settings 078 data on my chart, but the values seem to be on the right side (bad).
There is still room for a successful reset of codes, followed by verification of the emissions checks which could then pass an emissions check. I got my car inspected earlier this summer and my plates are good till Sept of 2018.

There are plenty of places in the log where there are logged engine error codes, but no OBD codes at all, and clean emissions status. Note the date and time entries in the log.

The P0401 engine code freeze frame mileage data updates when the code count increases.

It does seem like the P0401 errors are somewhat more often logged close to the start of a drive.

If I needed to pass inspection with a semi-clogged EGR filter, I would be tempted to try this:

wait for calculated soot to get close to regen, say 15 grams.

reset codes, and head for a drive. (at highway speeds if possible, over 70 mph would be ideal) when the last emissions codes cleared, would drive direct to the inspection station, and not turn off the car until it was in the inspection bay.

might work.

I had a chance to review some more data, saving info from engine codes, and the BS 78 data. (the log file a couple posts back, but with another week of watching....)

seems to me now that the good/bad line is more to the right than I had originally guessed. (chart in first post)

more like 120 mbar at 200c

the check sheet shared by Matt says should be less than 100 mbar (at/over 200C), but my guess is a code is not thrown until it gets to 120 or so.

My car has not thrown a P0401 since sometime Saturday. I did drive up to Hershey and back Saturday before I checked the codes (two and a half hours each way)

Here is data from the last week. (have frequency of 8 on the logged P0401 error in the engine ecu, but no pending or current OBD errors noted.



The next chart includes the above, plus earlier data after the last code reset, and includes a frequency of 8 P0401 errors logged in the engine controller.



for comparison, here is the chart from April (with the other members numbers included)

Just threw the code today and my tailpipe has a good coating of soot. At 123k miles it sounds like i'm well outside of the warranty. Am I going to do any damage by just ignoring the problem until the buyback?

I do not think so.

More than a few folks have driven for quite a while with a P0401 code and sooty pipe from a cracked DPF.

You need to take action if the code and light prevents you from an emissions check required for registration.

Any time you decide to drive with the MIL lit up, it is a good idea to read and verify the codes on a regular basis.
Having one code does not prevent another from showing up.

Funny thing happened with my car over the weekend.

sometime Friday another instanced of the P0401 code was recorded, and a DPF regen (I remember being in some traffic at low speeds when this was going on)

Only other thing I did was jack up the car and install a couple air bags inside the rear springs. The weather has cooled off a bit too.

Since Sunday, the Basic settings 078 values are back well under the should-be values of 100 mbar.

at temps of 198-252, the pressures are all now between 62-67 mbar.

will be interesting (to me anyway) to see if these lower EGR filter pressures continue, and if the car's engine controller does not record additional P0401 codes.

One more P0401 error, seems like about the time we stopped for lunch after driving to NY state. (from comparing the km logged with the P0401 freeze frame data with the vehicle km measuring block this morning)

never saw an MIL. put another 600 miles on after the error was noted.

Basic settings 078 read 110 mb at 246 degrees c after driving ten miles to work.

Just completed the 180k service, oil, filter, dsg, fuel filter, and changed out the brake fluid for grins. (the brake fluid in the Jetta looked like new, the fluid I pulled from my wife's 2012 Honda Accord looked dark)

still no additional P0401 codes, and the Basic settings 078 readings are back in the good side of my plot.

a couple recent DPF regens have been in traffic, vs on a clear highway.

will be interesting if the errors come back with greater frequency when it cools off, and our ski season of road trips gets moving.

Looked this morning, and see a new log for P0401 error in the engine controller.

subtracting the miles in the error from vehicle miles seen today, looks like it logged a couple days ago. 40 miles or a couple trips home-work. (vehicle miles only increments by ten km at a time, so this is not precise)

but the frequency is reset to 1 from the previous noted frequency of 10.

I have not reset codes.

Over the weekend, the MIL came on. (P0401 errors)

Spent a couple hours on Saturday driving my wife around door to door. Lots of park a minute, start and drive a few houses, park again.

Sunday drove to Skyline Drive, quite a few stops for photo ops. Lots of coasting at 35 mph downhill in 3 or 4 gear.

MIL came on as I started the car after stopping to see a menu in Stanardsville VA.

could not check the OBD till I got home.

When I did check, the engine controller showed a P0401 error, count increased to 4, and the miles listed in the error back off to about 20 miles before the stop (and lit MIL).

I ran google maps, compared miles in the P0401 error record, vs vehicle miles in advanced measuring blocks to back out where I was when the light came on, vs where I was when the last P0401 error was logged.

I get from this, that the MIL is set on start up, based on OBD errors.

Two hours of highway driving after noting the MIL, and by the time I checked, the basic settings were back in the expected good range.

This time I plan to not reset the MIL, but watch for a couple days and see what I can see.

afternoon update: consistent with the basic settings 78 readings, no additional P0401 errors. and the MIL was out when I started the car this afternoon.

the OBD status shows the P0401 error logged, and the lack of MIL.

here is data from my checks of the Basic settings 78

I compared the data points to increases in the P0401 freeze frame data, and ODB codes for pending codes.

the line is my separation between points which were noted shortly after increases in the P0401 frequency count, and those data points which do not seem close to increases in the count. (since the last time I reset the codes, the count (P0401 freeze frame frequency value) went from 0 to 10, reset to 1 by itself without me resetting, and now is up to 15)

I updated the first entry here, Please let me know if you see any parts of it that are confusing or just hard to read.

To close out the month, this is a chart with all the Basic Settings BS 78 data I collected on my car in November 2016.

I annotated a few data points with the date collected, and colored in red the points which are close to increases in the P0401 count.

Over the long weekend, we drove to VT and back, and the MIL was lit up on the drive up, but cleared first start up after the drive. the drive back was free of any P0401 error.

I find it interesting that in this intermittent P0401 state, the low pressure EGR pressure drop Basic settings value goes up, then down as I drive.

Seems like the increase is worse when driving long stretches in stop and go traffic, and decreases after good drives at speed (which include DPF regenerations)

my P0401 error count (Fault Frequency) is up to 21,

there are two freeze frame data sets logged with the single error code. the second one does not seem to update values when the log gets updated with an additional error.

the first set seems to get updated, but only the frequency is updated once the MIL gets lit up (even after it goes off)




I think I will reset everything watch it go from scratch again.

check engine light. here's what I was told...

Just 1k miles after 80k, and 1.4k miles after a VW dealership replaced our HPFP and further parts due to its demise, the 'CHECK ENGINE' light has popped on, AGAIN. Of course, this time it's juuuuuuust out of warranty, and we're told by VW it's the DPF failing. And, VW won't replace it, according to the dealer. So:

Should the dealer have checked this when the HPFP exploded? Considering the close proximity to that event, is there a chance VW would extend that 80k warranty 1500 miles, as it could have been their own dealer who failed to inspect the DPF as well? Or should we, as the VW service man said "drive it until you turn it in and hope for the best".

He did not offer a 'number of miles' the 2010 JSW TDI could go in this condition.

Currently, the CHECK ENGINE light goes on sometimes, and goes off sometimes.

For you tech types, here's the scan my local, non-VW service repair fellow did for me today. He suggested it could be an EGR part? The 'READ CODE' was:

01025 passive/Sporad: ic / Exhaust Gas: Recirc Flow. Insufficient Detected

if your tailpipe is a little sooty (wipe with a paper towel, any black sooty residue is an indicator of a cracked DPF) the VW technical service bulletin excerpted in the first post would apply, and the repair would be a new DPF and EGR filter.

I do not think it is related to the HPFP or repair. It is possible that P0401 errors were being logged when they replaced the HPFP, and they could have known it was going, but likely would have claimed that until the MIL (check engine) came on, it was not broken enough to trigger replacement under the 80,000 mile emissions component warranty.


when do you need to pass emissions checks? This is the practical deadline of a need to fix.

Like your car, in my case, the check engine goes off and on as I have been driving the car.

for your 2010, you may want to figure out if your car has the NOX cat attached to the DPF, or if there is a joint between them.



You (or your mechanic) would have to get under the car to see.

in the next month or so, we may learn of a VW fix for the cheating emissions. if your car has the single part (bottom of pic above), they might have to give you a DPF with the NOX cat which may be needed as part of the "fix"

if not, you will be on the hook to pay for a new DPF.

Have you registered with VW for the emissions fix or buyback?

It is possible that P0401 errors were being logged when they replaced the HPFP, and they could have known it was going, but likely would have claimed that until the MIL (check engine) came on, it was not broken enough to trigger replacement under the 80,000 mile emissions component warranty.


when do you need to pass emissions checks? This is the practical deadline of a need to fix.

Like your car, in my case, the check engine goes off and on as I have been driving the car.

for your 2010, you may want to figure out if your car has the NOX cat attached to the DPF, or if there is a joint between them.



You (or your mechanic) would have to get under the car to see.

in the next month or so, we may learn of a VW fix for the cheating emissions. if your car has the single part (bottom of pic above), they might have to give you a DPF with the NOX cat which may be needed as part of the "fix"

if not, you will be on the hook to pay for a new DPF.

Have you registered with VW for the emissions fix or buyback?
The check engine light AND the coil light were both on when the HPFP failed, so it's possible the DPF had failed by that point, but the dealer missed it due to the more obvious fault. Regarding soot, I believe the inside of the tailpipes look a little dark. We don't need 'smogging' for six months. If we drive 1,000 miles a month, is it likely the check engine light coming on will be the only side effect? Car seems to drive fine, and the regens are still functioning.
We have registered, but it takes up to 90 days to get a cheque, and there is no 'fix' as of yet. The dealer wasn't confident there ever would be.
If we can get 90 days of driving without another failure, we'd be happy to be done with it

I think you have no risk of the car blowing up (or just a quiet death) from that error.

you should be able to make it to a buy back ok.

there is, of course, the chance that something else will break,

so whenever the check engine light comes on, you should get it read to make sure it is not something else.

After the code reset in early Dec, the car developed a total of two P0401 codes (no MIL, no pending OBD errors) on the way home from another drive to VT from VA.

I was not able to check the basic settings 78 close enough to the error time to add to the error correlation, so reset the codes. I worked back that the code miles for the second was close to a fuel stop in Delaware, which was after some traffic-motivated moderate speed driving, and not too long after an active DPF regeneration.

since then no additional codes. drove north of Scranton over the weekend (pretty cold weather, but more typical 65-75 highway speeds)

checked the basic settings 78 today and saw 78 mbar at 210c. well within the ok side of my graph.

I am not sure how the EGR filter manages to unplug itself, perhaps some consolidation or clearing of the captured soot, or perhaps it just evaporates in hot exhaust somewhat.

I could understand how a slightly cracked DPF could leak more one day and less the next, kind of like a leaky faucet packing can drip for a while and then stop.

I'm fairly certain the EGR filter is made out of the same materials and principles as the DPF, so yes, theoretically, if you get the exhaust hot enough for long enough, it may very well do the same thing as a DPF, convert soot to ash under high temps.

It likely doesn't do it as effectively, as the airflow passed that filter is bound to be less during a DPF regen, but it's also a much smaller filter media to have to heat up and burn particulates into ash...

Of course, if the DPF were in perfect working order, there would be no soot post-DPF to clog the low pressure EGR filter ;)

I think about the soot conversion a little differently.
only a tiny fraction of the soot remains as ash. most of it gets converted to carbon dioxide. (thanks to the low sulfur fuel and low SAP oil)

I wonder why VW put a screen/filter in the low pressure EGR path. seems like they expected the DPF to leak soot particles somewhat, either normally, or from failures. the filter with pressure monitor (which seems like it reads across the EGR filter and the cooler/valve combo) seems a good way to detect failures of the DPF, and detect excess particulate emissions. my guess is the new EGR filter which could be part of the fix is designed in part to be a better leaky DPF detector.

I am thinking that somehow the soot which gets captured in the LP egr filter screen changes over time, kind of like ice cubes in the ice maker in my freezer. over time they evaporate some, and change in form as they go from individual cubes to a single mass of ice.

the DPF is made of porous ceramics with a catalyst to goose up the chemical reaction rates. I do not think the EGR filter has any catalyst to help. this just means, that the oxidation of any soot captured on the LP egr filter screen would have to happen without the help of any catalyst, but this just slows the process down.

I would think the Low pressure EGR would be regulated to a small amount of flow during regeneration. when you want more Oxygen at the DPF to burn off the soot, you could not call for as much EGR, which is there, of course, to reduce the excess oxygen in the system.


totally agree, of course, that if the DPF was in perfect working order, there would be nothing to catch in the LP EGR filter. (and no need for this thread :) )

this seems like a self-fixing car.

on Jan 26, with 305560 km on the car, I reset codes, (the count before the reset was 7 P0401 codes)

after that I saw and logged a single P0401 at 305974 km, (checked a couple times)

Today I hooked up again at just over 310,000 km, (this mileage translated from a manual record of miles when I took the snows off) and no codes stored at all.

Not sure if it would have self-reset if the OBD had seen a code and set the MIL, but the single error had no problem going away after a month of driving without a repeat of the error.

just back home from a cross-country trip (drove to Utah via Colorado and back)

car went over 200,000 miles just before getting home. (will update the first post)

counting from the 135,000 miles when I changed the exhaust flap, and later noticed soot in the photos, there are an additional 65,000 miles on the car.

during the cross country trip, we had visits from the MIL a couple times, for the P0401 error.

most of the time an MIL shows up on startup, but at least once, it came on in the middle of a long drive.

it still is a once in a while thing, evidence by checks of the obd codes after seeing the light. a stored code, but not a pending one, with the MIL lit says to me the last test sequence run by the ECU did not see conditions which trigger the P0401.

If I were to wish, I would wish for an additional field in the error code that reports how many times the check was run and not set the code.

639 Days Later: A start to the solution

Just a heads up, guys. The basic setting 03 is HIGH pressure EGR. This won't tell you much of anything about how the EGR filter is doing. The EGR filter is for the low pressure EGR system. They are two completely separate EGRs that pick up exhaust gases at different parts in the exhaust stream and also get introduced back into the intake stream at completely different areas.

The high pressure EGR is conventional, same basic principle as it always has been on previous TDIs. It takes exhaust gas from the well-pressurized exhaust region before the turbo, this is what allows it to overcome the little bit of pressure in the intake system and be introduced into the intake stream under light loads.

Since NOx requirements have gotten so much stricter, the low pressure EGR was needed as it could potentially be used under all load conditions, not just light loads.

So, they take exhaust gases post-DPF, then it has to go through the EGR filter, and it gets re-introduced into the intake where there actually is a bit of vacuum: near the inlet of the turbo's compressor. Meaning the low pressure EGR has to go through the compressor housing of the turbo, all the intercooler ducting (wonder how intercooler icing became a thing? Thank low pressure EGR) before it finally gets into the intake manifold. The high pressure EGR goes from exhaust manifold straight to the intake manifold.

So, that having been said, there are two separate EGR systems to do testing on. Basic setting 03 is the same as it always has been, this cycles the high pressure EGR.

Basic setting 67 is what cycles the low pressure EGR. This is what will actually give you a good idea of if there's clogging with the EGR filter. Difference in value should be greater than 100.

Basic setting 68 will actuate the exhaust flap that's way downstream. Difference in pressure should be greater than 50 mbar.

Basic setting 78 also gives you an idea of how clogged the filter is. I don't believe this cycles any valves, but it does raise the RPM and creates a fair bit of exhaust pressure and allows you to view the differential pressure before vs. after the low pressure EGR filter in fields 1 and 3. The difference should be LESS than 100 mbar.

There's two exhaust differential pressure sensors, one keeps tabs on the pressure differential before vs. after the DPF. The other keeps tabs on pressure before vs. after the low pressure EGR filter. That's what basic setting 78 is letting you see, the differential pressure before vs. after the EGR filter.

2013-14 CJAA engines also have a basic setting 49 that is a pass/fail test for the DPF. 2012 and earlier do not have this.
HOLY S***! The above title states the number of days +/- 7 days of fighting the P0401 battle. Blood, sweat, tears, currency, and mental health all thrown at this problem. Thank you, Matt! So the question then becomes with these following results, where do I head?

Basic Settings 67: Absolute utter failure, OFF 540 ON 525
Basic Settings 68: OPEN-23 CLOSED-90
Basic Settings 78: Block 1: 90 Block 3: Remained at 3 the entire time

So do I pull the Low Pressure EGR Valve off the cooler and run Basic Settings 67 to ensure the valve is moving? Is it possible it is just the valve and not the DPF/EGR filter issue? I do not have any other codes beside the P0401. I did have to replace the Low Pressure EGR Filter because the canister blew out and was sitting on the bottom pipe connected to the EGR cooler. After replacing the filter, it was about 2,000 miles before the P0401 came back.

Going over 205,000 miles. the MIL came to visit for a P0401 error. was on a highway trip, 400 miles of freeway with my rooftop camper so a bit more drag.

funny thing was, this came on just as restarted after I made a rest stop at the end of a DPF regen (FF02 status on my '09 from the Polar-FIS). the regen completed as I came to a stop, and I kept the engine idling till the pre-turbo temp came down a bit.

after a short bio break, headed back down the road.

a bit later, the car went back into regen, a de-SOx cycle, FF20, which lasted for 30 miles or so at highway speeds.

strange since I have always seen this right after the FF02 DPF regen, as described in the self study guide.

to make it more unique, right after the de-SOx FF20, it went back into FF02 DPF regen and pretty much stayed there.

I fingered through the settings I have displayed, and noted that the requested regeneration value read 7. (usually the DPF regen gets triggered when the requested regen is 5, calculated soot hits 16.2 or a bit over, and reduces value during the regen to a value of 0 or 1)

this regen went on for quite a while, with high temps pre-turbo, and before and after the DPF. miles since regen increased every six miles or so (ten km), and the requested regen value stayed at 7.

eventually I had to stop for another break, and did so after it had been running for over a hundred miles.

in the rest stop, I cycled the power off and then re-started, and stayed at idle until the pre-turbo temp was reduced to something sane.

the requested regen was at 0, the calculated soot at 0.3, and the miles since regen reset to 0 as well.

the MIL went its merry way, (away from my instrument panel) my guess is two checks in a row with acceptable values by the computer. I validated the OBD status had pending and stored codes when the light was lit (using VCDS) and later, that the pending was gone, but stored code still active.


anyway, this may be of limited interest, but if anyone else reading has seen anything like this, would be interested in hearing about it.
