2009 JSW TDI (gone but not forgotten)
My 2009 JSW has a steering wheel controller part number 1K0 953 549 CQ. Does anybody know whether or not this controller supports a Multi-function Steering wheel? I have a MFSW but I can't test it until my new harness arrives, so I thought I'd ask just in case somebody else has already attempted to use this combination.

In case anybody cares - an auto-scan of my car is posted below.

TIA

Don

From what reading I've done, indications are that you need a new SWCM.

IIRC, you need to ensure that the SWCM, clockspring, and Steering Wheel are all compatible with one another. I helped another dubber try and code his MFSW, however he got nothing because he used his old clockspring instead of the new replacement he received. Once we replaced the clockspring all was well.

I would imagine one indicator that it would not work is if you tried to re-do the soft coding of the module and see if it will accept the coding for buttons. If it rejects the coding, then you know for sure that you're out of business with this module. Just plug your old coding back in when you're done.

Thanks for the reply. I have already ordered a new harness for the MFSW and airbag (p/n 1k0 971 584 L). I do not know if this includes the "clockspring" or not. My plan was to do exactly as you said: First use VCDS to try and code my current controller for an MFSW. If it accepts the coding - then I will try the MFSW and see if the buttons work, If not I will swap out the controllers (I also have a controller that DOES support a MFSW - I bought a MFSW w/ controller). I don't know about the "clockspring" because I haven't had it apart yet. I was just hoping that somebody here would know whether or not it would work. I should have the harness in a few days and (with luck) I will try installation this weekend.

Ok.. You're going to have to forgive me here if I sound like I'm coming off as rude or know-it-allish.. It's not my intent at all.. You put "clockspring" in quotes a couple of times, so I'm making the assumption you aren't sure what the clockspring is.. If you know this, please forgive me.

The clockspring, sometimes known as the "slip ring" is the peice that allows the steering wheel to turn, yet maintain electrical connection with the rest of the car. Your steering wheel / airbag harness hooks to one part of it, the SWCM plugs into the other. Steering wheels have to be mated to the proper clockspring to ensure that the right signals are being sent over the right "pins" for lack of a better description of the function.

It is my understanding that there are variations in the clockspring designs and that the steering wheel, clock spring, and controller need to all be compatible with one another.

From what I read, it sounds like you didn't get a new clocksrping? The clockspring is the clear round thing in the picture under item 10. in this howto: VWVortex MFSW Retrofit HowTo (The one with the "O RLY" owl in it ;) )

There's no harm in trying what you have. It may work, it may not. I think when the guy I was helping out had the improper clockspring the G85 steering angle sensor error would not go away.

Honestly, it's not that bad of a job. Probalby an hour from start to finish to get it fitted and tested.

That's pretty much what I thought. I put it in quotes simply because I haven't had it apart yet and I was not certain about it. No offence taken. I hope I do not need a new clockspring/slip ring, simply because I did not order one. I guess I will see what happens when I try and get it to work. If I need one, I will have to pull the steering wheel twice. This is not a big problem since you can re-use the bolt 5 times (according to my manual). Thanks again

FYI: An acquaintance on mine works in the parts dept. of a VW dealer, and he checked. For 2009 models (at least) there is only one part number for clocksprings, therefore it should work (I hope). I didn't ask about other years. BTW: I also learned (the hard way) that 2009 Jettas require the MFSW harness with one purple airbag connector not two (orange & green). You need p/n 1K0 971 584 C not "L". Again, I don't know what MY they changed from two plugs to one for the airbag.
