I have a bluetooth obd adapter i use with torque sometimes, and it gives me codes.

But can i use it with ross-tech software? or do i need a very specific cable for that?

I just want to check my fan circuits and figure out why my fans are intermittent.

ODBII (by definition) is only concerned with engine and emissions systems. To "talk" with any other system in your car you need a tool that speaks VW's own proprietary language. VCDS is not the only tool that will do this, but it undoubtedly the best.

VCDS Lite is a free version. It's 99% usable.
Check the Ross-Tech site for details.
It can be used to check if your OBD adapter works.

VCDS Lite only works with com ports 1 to 4.
My bluetooth obd adapter works with a higher port and I have not been able to change the port and get it working.

I do have a wired non Ross-Tech cable that does work with it and I registered it with them mostly to get use of the timing checker.
