Over the course of Monday and Tuesday I finally installed the rebuilt head and the new VNT-17 I'd had lying around for over a year and a half. Also got a brand new set of transporter injectors and all I can say is WOW. Car feels like brand new. Smooth fantastic power with little to no smoke. I couldnt think of a better thing to do for my car now that it just turned 150k.

Re: Fresh Head, Fresh Injectors, Fresh VNT-17, and

Pics! Pics!
I just had to paint it red.....

Its difficult to see, but I clocked the vnt17 about 90Degrees counter clockwise till the outlet was about 1/2" from the block. Then I turned the stock rubber hose around and used that to go into the 17. I trimmed about 2 inches off the rubber, cut the end off my upsolute pipe, and had a new end bent and welded up to meet with the stock rubber hose. Rather than weld the new piece to the remaining upsolute pipe, I just used a silicone connector. That way if I ever need to install a vnt 15 again I can. Also, I'll be adding a bracket to the new section to secure it to the frame rail. The shop that did the welding did a great job keeping it really close to the side skirt so I wont have tire rub issues.

This shot is my favorite. I had the valve cover back off today to re-torque the ARP head studs. Stock head bolts are 44 ft lb plus a quarter turn plus a quarter turn. I followed the instructions that came with the ARP bolts. It said, "follow manufacturers head stud tightening sequence but DO NOT follow manufacturers torque setting. Tighten ARP head studs to 80 ft lb. I did just that, ramping up from the initial 44 in increments. I was supprised how much more turn I was able to get out of them with the engine hot.

I just love that shine from the flash coming from the lifter...

I wasn't aware ARP made headstuds specific to the TDI, Did you get the ones for the 2.0 8v?????

Re: Fresh Head, Fresh Injectors, Fresh VNT-17, and

They dont. You have to order the set for the ford inline 4 for the "cosworth sierra/escort (12mm)" part #251-4701
They fit like a glove. Plus they have a allen head on the top of the studs to aid in spinning them down, unlike the kit that raceware sells. Plus, the ARP kit was $109.52 from nolimitmotorsport, while the Raceware studs are $179.95. Thats a hell of a difference. Besides, ARP is very very well respected.

Here are the directions they came with.

Re: Fresh Head, Fresh Injectors, Fresh VNT-17, and

Maybe a bit silly question here, but what was the main reason you did the headstuds? Paranoid with the power increases/high boost? I am guessing these will keep the head flater against the block or something as they are stronger in the event that you go a bit overboard on cylinder pressures, but I am not sure. I guess if you have a head off anyway, this would be the thing to do. Thanks!

exactly. I figure its just prudent, since I'm pushing more boost and fuel. Its cheap insurance.

I am suprised you don't have an OMI or equivalent yet. Better get while it lasts....

Maybe it's me...but I do notice a difference...even on a stock motor

Re: Fresh Head, Fresh Injectors, Fresh VNT-17, and

Oh, I've got one... I just dont use it. There is something about that abrupt transition from the large pipe to the small turbo that I dont like. Plus, my mounting tab broke, and I've been too lazy to get it fixed. ( mine was pre-rubber grommet)
I'll put it back on when I can get a reducing elbow that fits to make the trasition better.

Re: Fresh Head, Fresh Injectors, Fresh VNT-17, and

What I used for my home made TIP was to cut the last little bit of elbo off the oem one and glue (goop) that into my pipe I made, then you have a farily smooth transition, with little effort put in and very cheap.

I don't like the abrupt transition either....but....looking at the stock pipe....that thing is a total mess.

Re: Fresh Head, Fresh Injectors, Fresh VNT-17, and

I've been interested in using racewares studs for a while, since mickey used them and reported improved mileage. In one of the threads, someone else did the research and posted the part number for the arp studs. I just kept that info filed away... I can now verify that they fit and work quite well.

Re: Fresh Head, Fresh Injectors, Fresh VNT-17, and

80LBS was enough to keep stuff from leaking, or did you have to torque them abit more??

PS Anyone know if MK3 and MK4 headbolts are the same ?????

Re: Fresh Head, Fresh Injectors, Fresh VNT-17, and

Using the moly lube that ARP supplies, 80lbs was fine. I have not seen any leaks.

Re: Fresh Head, Fresh Injectors, Fresh VNT-17, and

Justin,
That looks like a GREAT job...congrats!! Now you'll need some dyno numbers to keep the smile on you face. I guess I'll have to get my block pulled and painted before I can show my face again at Impex. Sure wish I join you guys at Waterfest...maybe in '06 if all goes well.

Here's my hopes for next year if all goes as planned. Pull and re-do the head, put in the ARP studs, do something regarding the cam. I'm on the list for one of the cam's David Oh developed but it's fairly unlikely that I'll be lucky enough to recieve one. If that doesn't come through I'll talk it over with Jeff and either regrind what I have or see what's available in Europe. With the PP764's I smoke in hot humid weather. Below 40F no problem. I may add a Quafie and or rebuild the tranny as 2nd gear has always been a problem. Lastly I'd likre to rebuild my VNT 17 and try using the GT 20 piece that DieselDes has suggested to reduce the turbo lag. Oh well always something to try.

Now if I could just get my block cleaned and painted I could forget the rest...really you've done a fantastic job, I;ll look forward to a ride next spring at Impex.
