Stuck between pd130 passat estate and a4 avant which would be better and 5 or 6 speed?

6 speed has a stronger clutch. You can upgrade it to higher torque.
Chose the AVF engine (this one has 6 speed).

Should i go fwd or 4wd quattro or 4motion?

Quattro is usually a Torsen system, while 4Motion is a clutch based Haldex system. Although, I think the A4 uses a Haldex system.

Best sticking to fwd?

The Passat B5 /5.5 1998-2005 uses same transmision with A4 B5/B6, with Torsen, because both have longitudinal mounted engines.

You can chose quattro/4motion if you like it and fits your budget.
