VCDS as non VAG OBD2 scanner

Can my new Hex+Can VCDS cable be used as a generic OBD2 scanner for non-VAG autos?

I have a friend that drives a 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt. He says that many places have difficulty reading the codes. I hooked my Vag-Com up and was able to determine that his CEL was triggered by a slowly responding thermostat.

So in this application the VCDS did what my generic OBD-II reader wouldn't. It's just another plus for this fantastic tool in my toolbox.
