Here's the real world with a 2006 Jetta DSG TDI:

City mileage is high 20's to low 30's in the city with AC on. Low to mid 30's in the city with it off. Tires at 40 psi.

Have gotten high 30's to low 40's on the highway with AC off.

Check the February 2005 Popular Mechanics "Hybrid vs. Diesel" article.
http://www.popularmechanics.com/automotive/new_cars_trucks/1215782.html?page=6&c=y They only got 32 in the city with a manual transmission, but a whopping 53 on the highway.

Could probably get more if I coasted to every stop and cruised at 50 mph on the interstate but at what cost in road rage from other drivers? If you live in Oklahoma or North Dakota you can get away with it but in a big metropolitan area forget it.

Still, 30 mpg in the city is pretty good with an automatic.

I know what you mean about the road rage. I hope it never happens but Ernie has a target on the back of his VW. Lately I have had allot of people settle in back and just tolerate me. Maybe they to are starting to think about fuel cost. I have found that if I leave the black stain around the tail pipe people are more tolerant. They see the stain and realize its a diesel and figure I am trying to get max mpg's, not just holding up traffic. Now I ride closer to center and when there is assured distance for them to pass I move over quickly to the white line to show them its clear to pass. Recently many have just decided to stay behind me at 55.

In a new one (<3000 miles) with mostly highway driving at mostly <=65 mph, I'm getting 43-49 mpg based on the "tank" method.

I just had my 5000 miles oil change. My 06 Jetta has consistently given me 36 mpg with 70:30, city/highway mix. AC is always ON! It's hot here in Raleigh, NC. I usually drive ~ 70 on the open road. I'd get run over if I went any slower. I checked open road mileage twice and got 45.0 and 47.6. I drive normal, no coasting or drafting.

I get 38.5 consistantly in town with A/C on driving like a 20 yr old would. I get 42.5 consistantly traveling 80-85 mph w/Ac and some run ups to 100. I have ot agree I get better mileage if I lay into it and I only have 4400 miles so far. mine is a 06 5spd manual.

I got 33 mpg in town during the heat of the summer and 35 this week with better weather. I also took a lot of short trip, 20 miles to work, 4 miles to church, grocery, shopping, etc.

However this summer, I got 45 mpg on a long road trip to Colorado with cruise control at 73-78 mpg fully loaded.
