Filled up the Beetle tonight 724.4 miles (707 the low fuel light came on). Clicked off at 13.8 but squeezed in 14.654 gallons.

A couple traffic jams and accidents killed any chance of 800 mile tank.

My personal best, two +700 mile tanks on the same roundtrip, Memphis to Oshkosh Wisconsin...

729.3 miles 14.5 gal = 50.27 mpg $3.249/gal
707.4 miles 14.4 gal = 49.13 mpg $3.799/gal

* 14.5 gal fill up, yes low fuel light on, needle near but not on bottom, range was the please fill up now.
Once I filled tank with 14.6 gal. Normally I fill up with more 13.5 to 14 gal,. On first leg I did "top it off".
Note fuel prices above. What a difference two years makes. Just paid $2.229/gal, with 0.20 cent store discount $2.099/Gal.

- 98% on freeway
- No special techniques
- DSG, 17" Michelins MXV4 @ 40psi
- Driver only and some baggage for weekend.
- Did speed limit typically to +5 mph, 55-65 mph
- Calculated MPG and MFD display match within a 1/10th
- Made pits stops almost exclusively at freeway rest areas (easy on and off).
- Had ice chest for food/drink, so I didn't have to hunt for food on surface streets.

I did it! With an 01m! Last week I was coming back from a trip to New England and I crossed the 650 mile mark without the low fuel light. I thought I had a pretty good shot at finally hitting the 700-mile mark, and I just squeezed it in. I hadn't intended to run the tank so close to empty, but I was on a stretch of road that I was unfamiliar with and it just worked out so that I arrived at the station at 699.7. I drove past the station a few blocks and circled back to just officially cross the 700 mark. I hear it's supposed to be nearly unattainable with the 01m automatic, and then only if you are really disciplined and stretch out the miles.

But I wasn't even trying. I filled up Thursday evening with a shot a Power Service, vented and filled to the top of the neck. Friday, I drove from Braintree MA to Florida MA and return, using the Mass Pike and Rt. 2 and I-91/90 on the way back. Traffic, idling, passing, running with traffic 70-85mph, AC on. Then on Saturday morning, I left Braintree and headed down I-95 to NYC, then out I-78 to Allentown and south on Rt. 222, where I thought I'd be able to find plenty of fuel options, but Rt. 222 by-passes most of the small towns now, so it wasn't until I got into Fleetwood, PA, that I was able to finally splash the tank again. The gauge was flat on E and I was really worried that the car was going to start sputtering any minute, but it never blinked.

Refilled again, no PS, (I emptied the bottle on the last fill-up) vented, and it took just over 16 gallons to top off the tank! By my quick calculations, I was around 43.75mpg for the tank! Car is stock, no mods or tuning, most of the underbody splash guards and panels fell off long ago, I run 35-37 psi in the tires, and have been using the AC just about constantly since I finally got a new compressor installed about a month ago. I had the injection pump re-sealed over the winter, and my mechanic must have that fuel plate dead-on where it needs to be. This car still runs and drives great at 282k and I LOVE the mpg! Just wanted to share!

I have pictures if I can figure out how to post...

I got a 690 mile tank on my way back to Florida from getting my car tuned. I guess cruising at 110 isn't terribly efficient. Maybe my next tank.

i made a 4,600 miles round trip starting on I-5 to I-10 and many two lane hwy from 94551 to 38701 zip code 2,400 miles to mississippi; return trip 2,200 miles on I-30 / I-40 back to 94551 calif. i kept a 2.5 gal spare tank since is diesel fuel will not stink the 2012 Jetta TDI. it did average 47 to 51 mpg speed between 70-75 mph. i stopped four times going there and four times coming back. there was a supercharged mustang passing me three times on arizona and texas I-10. maybe he had to make piss stops or just too many pit stops on his gas guzzler. lotta people asked me what my gas mileage was. they must be jealouse seeing me gassing up with diesel.

.....just watching the MFI during an all Interstate trip......

The Range got up to 690 (while the trip odometer read 100). Theoretically that would be 700 miles.

Now all of us know this is NOT the proper way to calculate MPG.

Using pen and paper (gallons pumped divided into miles driven) will tell a different story.

My all time best is 54 1/2 MPG. But that's not on a full tank. No fair.

One of these days....................

all the best, ez

I'm at 620 miles and still have just under a quarter tank. I'll post if I make it tomorrow night. Drove from twin falls Idaho to my home town in Roseburg and the trip computer showed 55.1mpgs. I have a 2015 Jetta 6speed manual and started the trip at about 1300 miles.

Dangit only got to 690 with it telling me 20 miles to empty....I however had 30 miles to the next station so decided it was best not to get into the 700 club and end up sitting on the side of the highway. 14.5 gallons to fill up netted me 47.6mpgs... Maybe this tank!

I think I got over 700 twice on my Golf. Also note that was not trying to break the 700 barrier, it was getting to my favorite Chevron one time and another was looking for a station that had diesel.

Got over 700 miles 2 tanks ago, but typically only go high 600's due to convenience of stopping by my regular station to fill up. I usually only fill up on my day off or on the way home. Trying to do it on my morning commute never works for me due to traffic and always seeming like I'm running late!

I'm IN! First car (second one, "Tanko," is running 732 miles and is yet to be refilled), "Tanka" clocked 729 miles on 14.272 gallons: no light yet. 51.1 mpg. Probably could have made it to 800 miles.

First tank following a ventectomy. Also includes install of Malone 2 tune, which I haven't been shy about "testing.":D Got caught in a ton of stop-and-go traffic (on the freeway!): UG dropped 3mpg!:( Also had some dyno runs in there!:D

Went 737.3 miles on last tank, 16.706 gallons to fillup = 44.14 mpg. :D I still had about 80 miles range left based on tank size, but only 40 miles per MFD. It's easy to do +700 miles on a Passat, I don't think I could in a Golf or Jetta since I'm not one to tempt fate!

In, again! This time it's with my other car, "Tanko."

746 miles on 14.298 US gallons (52.2 mpg)

Fuel warning light came on at 737 miles.

Probably could have hit 800 miles (about one more gallon's worth).

Made it!

Didn't have to try terribly hard, but it's my first 700 mile tank. Went down to Circuit of the Americas for the Lone Star Le Mans.

2013 4-door Golf TDI, stage 2. Crossed 35k miles on this tank so it's starting to break-in.

My brother was with me the whole tank along with clothes/camera gear for 4 days, a few gallons of water, and the a/c on the whole time (if that matters).

50.9mpg overall.

Filled with 13.877 gallons so I had a little more to go, but we hit a pretty stiff headwind the last 25 miles and the computer dropped to 15 miles to empty pretty fast.

Almost

675 Miles on 15.4 Gallons. I Might of coaxed another 25 miles out of Her.
Next time I'm going to try Straight #2 Diesel instead of the 20% Bio diesel Blend.

Bio Diesel Blend ??

I have been getting a 20% Bio diesel blend on the last 3-4 fill-ups. Averaging
43-48 MPG. When I first bought the TDI I filled it up with standard #2 Diesel.
I Got 57.6 MPG From Tumwater,Wa to Cottage Grove,Or
After that I have been using the 20% Blend.
Are any of you folks using the Blended Bio Diesel Fuels ??
Should my Mileage be the same as on standard #2 Diesel ??
I wonder if I'm loosing power with the Blend Vs # 2 Diesel ??

Thanks

Biodiesel has about 15% less energy content than #2 diesel. Therefore at a 20 percent blend, you have about 3% less energy content than straight #2 diesel.

I did my first 700+ in my Jetta and didn't try hard 70-75mph the whole tank with some city driving mixed in) which was surprising. Details are in signature and I filled up with 15gal (46.71mpg) so I could have gone further for sure. :-D

15.252 Gallons, 731.5 Miles. This was back on May 25, 2015. Low fuel light was not on yet. I might have been able to eek out 800 miles on this tank based on where the needle is, but I don't have regular commutes and was near the B20 pump I use.

This was from last Friday night (Saturday morning, actually). Drove from home in MA to Wythesville VA. Low fuel light came on just as I got off the highway to go to my hotel.

Fill was at 800.9 miles the next AM at 15.66 gallons. 51 MPG. Not bad for traffic, thunderstorms, wind, and running at 80 the rest of the time.

Made it last night. West Virginia killed my chance of 800 miles, but it can be done. Tire pressure was 40psi, topped off with 3/4 BP diesel, averaged 65mph.

Those figures are in my dreams. The most I've ever squeezed out of my DSG are 642! Then again, I start to get bored, another TDI shoots by, and lead foot starts to get heavy.

I was really surprised, I thought it was going to be pushing it to get to 700 because I think the closest I've been was 615. It takes some work - mainly had to drive like a semi, take it slow up the hills and cruise at 65. I think on my way back I'm just going to set the cruise and forget it instead of going for 800. I didn't have any other passengers to complain about driving slow and was in no rush so figured I'd just see how it would go.

And this is post-flash that everyone seems to think their economy was hurt by.

First real attempt and i succeeded!

Most of these were after a day of driving to and from work.

Over the tank i averaged 57.9 mpg

Things i would change. try to avoid rush hour traffic, as i sat twice in stop and go for an hour each.
check tire pressure and adjust to 45 psi
remove all weight from the vehicle as the rear was full of tools ~200 lbs.
