I did it! With an 01m! Last week I was coming back from a trip to New England and I crossed the 650 mile mark without the low fuel light. I thought I had a pretty good shot at finally hitting the 700-mile mark, and I just squeezed it in. I hadn't intended to run the tank so close to empty, but I was on a stretch of road that I was unfamiliar with and it just worked out so that I arrived at the station at 699.7. I drove past the station a few blocks and circled back to just officially cross the 700 mark. I hear it's supposed to be nearly unattainable with the 01m automatic, and then only if you are really disciplined and stretch out the miles.
But I wasn't even trying. I filled up Thursday evening with a shot a Power Service, vented and filled to the top of the neck. Friday, I drove from Braintree MA to Florida MA and return, using the Mass Pike and Rt. 2 and I-91/90 on the way back. Traffic, idling, passing, running with traffic 70-85mph, AC on. Then on Saturday morning, I left Braintree and headed down I-95 to NYC, then out I-78 to Allentown and south on Rt. 222, where I thought I'd be able to find plenty of fuel options, but Rt. 222 by-passes most of the small towns now, so it wasn't until I got into Fleetwood, PA, that I was able to finally splash the tank again. The gauge was flat on E and I was really worried that the car was going to start sputtering any minute, but it never blinked.
Refilled again, no PS, (I emptied the bottle on the last fill-up) vented, and it took just over 16 gallons to top off the tank! By my quick calculations, I was around 43.75mpg for the tank! Car is stock, no mods or tuning, most of the underbody splash guards and panels fell off long ago, I run 35-37 psi in the tires, and have been using the AC just about constantly since I finally got a new compressor installed about a month ago. I had the injection pump re-sealed over the winter, and my mechanic must have that fuel plate dead-on where it needs to be. This car still runs and drives great at 282k and I LOVE the mpg! Just wanted to share!
I have pictures if I can figure out how to post...
