Hello Everyone-
I just received my ALH engine today so the first thing I did was put a breaker bar on it to see if it would turn over freely, well it turns over real easy by hand,is this normal?
I would have thought with such high compression it would be rather difficult to turn by hand.

You should feel two significant compression strokes per rotation.

Where'd you get this engine?

I can feel both compressions but they are not significant.

"Just that it turns over much easier with those items removed."

Yeah, which got me to thinking something may not be right

and if you're only just getting around to checking the condition of what appears to be a recent purchase , exactly what did you do as part of your due diligence prior to parting with your cash??

Verify that there are no obstructions to the air intake. I know that engines will spin pretty readily if the ASV is closed (which equates to blocked air intake).

How used? Has it been sitting? All the manifolds on? Are you sure the GP's are installed?

First off Thanx for the replies...
OK,apparently I'm stronger than I think,especially with a 24" breaker bar.
Had an acquaintance who owns a diesel performance shop come by and look at it
and said it's fine.He is going to bring his compression gauge next time He's down
so we know for sure.
As Joe Dirt said "I'M NUUUUUU"
Engine came with everything from airbox to downpipe. Not a wire or hose was cut.
Couple of photos

That Turbo is OE for that engine. It's a VNT15 which is a fairly robust Turbo that can provide nice boost with the appropriate tune. And, with proper maintenance, it will last well beyond 300k miles.

I know it's the OE VNT15 turbo for that engine, I just noticed that it has the old style lower bracket and looped oil return line with the banjo bolt fitting in the block.

I thought these were only used on the 1999 models and a few 2000's. (My 2000 Beetle has this style).

In any case, it sure is a super clean engine...very nice!

Somehow I missed the last two posts...
Andybees, that's good to know and it has no end play that I can feel and applying
a little side pressure and rotating it no way will touche the housing.

Rembrant,I searched a bunch of photos for ALH return lines and all of them were
straight and fastened with an AN type fitting.
I haven't looked into it yet but hoping I can flip it around so the loop is towards
the front of the engine.

I'm not sure if you can or not, but you can switch it over to the newer style oil return line if need be. You have to add a fitting in the block to replace the banjo bolt and washers.
