Yup, you saw it here. Not only are they increaseing in North America, but in Germany as well. For the first half of 1999 Diesel sales were up 34.9% over the first half of 1998. As for the month of June, the number is 34.1% over June of 1998. To help put these nubmers in perspective, sales in general are up 5.8% for the month and 5.1% for the first half of the year.
As for cars VW has sold in Germany:
<table width="75%" border="0"><tr><td>Make</td><td>June 1999</td><td>June 1998</td></tr><tr><td>VW</td><td>66 984 cars (18.4% Market Share)</td><td>62 531 cars (18.2% Market Share)</td></tr></table>
<table width="75%" border="0"><tr><td>Make</td><td>Jan - June 1999</td><td>Jan - June 1998</td></tr><tr><td>VW</td><td>399 888 cars (19.6% Market Share)</td> <td>360 391 cars (18.6% Market Share)</td></tr></table>
With this type of demand, the North Americian market will continue to play second fiddle
PS From these stats, just over 47% of VW's sold in Germany were Golfs (#1 car in Germany by a large margin) and the Bora (Jetta) didn't even make the top 50. The Audi TT even had more sales then the Bora and made number 44!
