Idle speed on our 2010 TDI seems to be about 850. Before its fully warmed up, the idle speed seems to hold at around 950.

Would like to have a digital readout of this but haven't been able to figure out how to get it on the MFD. Would rather have that than digital speed readout, which is available.

Would anyone care to elaborate why you'd want to change idle speed?

Would a slower idle speed give better for fuel consumption when doing a lot of city driving?

Why would you want it faster?

Does the vag-com allow you to change idle speed freely within a fixed range?

^In my opinion, there isn't one. Changing the idle speed is silly. There is nothing wrong with where our cars idle right now. They only consume about .1 gallons of diesel an hour at an idle, and if you live anywhere cold, you will seriously never get up to temp and never produce heat if you change the idle any lower.

If anything, a higher-idle, such as 1100rpms (which these cars will idle to anyways, as a high-idle, when cold enough...) would be nice to keep the car producing heat when idling for extended periods of time.

according to VCDS, my PD consumes 0.8l/h of fuel when the engine is at full operating temperature and idling. The idle speed is 820-840 RPM. Does the consumption seem high?

Dont know really anything about pd's.. sorry

But from the data you present, .8l/h is right around .2gal/hour. You have a totally different car, so I dont have any other advice to offer other than you seem to be right about on-par.

Thanks for your response... I suppose most people would leave the idle alone. I don't see much reason to change it any lower... mine is estimated(by eye) to be about 950rpm. I'm also not in a very cold climate nor stuck in traffic so much so idling higher to keep things warm isn't relevant.

If one was to change their idle-speed, how would you do it with VCDS 10.6.3?

Also, could anyone point me in the direction of a thread explaining each of the 10 'blocks' for group 000?
Thanks!!

from: A4 TDI engine measuring blocks/groups
Engine idle speed: range 42 - 45 = 870-950
Start of injection: range 12 - 75 = 2 degrees ATDC - 3 degress BTDC
Throttle position: 0 = 0 %
Injection quantity: 11 - 45 = 2.2 - 9.0 mg/stroke
Manifold Absolute Pressure
Atmospheric pressure
Engine coolant temperature: 80 - 35 = 80 - 110 degrees C
Intake Manifold Temperature: 182 - 50 = 10 - 110 degrees C
Fuel Temperature: 91 - 201 = 20 - 80 degrees C
Air mass: 69 - 111 = 230 - 370 mg/H
And do Idle adaptation to adjust your idle RPM.
