No problems, noticed and expect common "hesitation" for clutches to engage when starting from stop. As long as it remains reliable, I'm a happy camper. Also noticed occassionally that when decel to stop, clutches must not disengage fast enough making slight rough feel from engine.

DSG question

I just took my car in for the 40,000 mile service. When I went back to pick it up I noticed that they did not charge me for the DSG fluid change. I went to ask the mechanic about it and he said it only gets done at 100, 000 according to his schooling for the Audi's. I showed him the book and he was puzzled. he checked with VW and they so much as told him to just check the condition of the fluid and only change it if it looked dirty. So he is going to check it next week. I ask if this was going to cause my warranty to be voided if the tranny went south and he said they said no. This has been recorded in the service record they keep so I have proof.

If anyone out there can get their hands on an Audi handbook for one with a DSG I would love to hear what is say the service interval is.

I will keep you posted as to the outcome of the fluid test.

I have the Audi Self-Study Guide for the DSG and it specifies 40,000 mile service intervals. My owner's manual and my Bentley manual both say every 40,000 miles a fluid and filter change must be done on the DSG. I don't care what they've recorded in your service record, I would have them change it anyway because every piece of literature I've seen on the DSG says 40,000 miles = fluid/filter change.

Perhaps VW has revised its service schedule for the DSG because of all the copmlaints of high maintenance costs for the DSG??

Perhaps, but I hope not! I want to keep this car for 600,000 miles, and if maintenance every 60k is too infrequent, damn the costs - I will pay it because I want the car (and this awesome tranny) to last.

PROBLEMS:
Motor starts in gear during several near & below zero cold starts. Meaning car lurches forward while cranking, which stalls motor. Driving down road, DSG shifts, but clutches don't want to let go. Problem ceases after 5-10 minutes of driving. Assumption is electronic clutches applying too much pressure due to cold during break-in. Car was less than 2 months old and less than 3000 miles. A few others have reported similar experiences.

I love the DSG ! As an active driver, I have always preferred a manual transmission in small and sports cars. Before ordering, I tested a 5 speed and DSG back to back and was amazed. To me, there was no perceptable loss in performance with the DSG. Since I use the car for commuting and work, the DSG selection was a no brainer.
My only complaint has been low mpg. I do drive quick, but I thought it would be higher. My first tank was the 28mpg. I usually see 33mpg. My last tank was best yet at 34.5. I think the cool weather, no need for ac, and recent 5k service contributed. I run stock air pressure and calculate based on miles travelled divided by gallons required to fill up. I hope it gets better the more miles I put on it !
I often wonder how many people posting 42+mpg with a DSG are getting that information from their Pkg 2 displays or if they are manually calculating. I have heard the computer is very optimistic.

Starting to get an odd shudder on down-shifting. RPM's are dipping to 1,400 RPM before it down shifts to the next lower gear when in 'D'. Noticed RPM surging 100rpm when driving 45mph this evening on the drive home on a flat road. (looking for ideas on these issues, PM me).

Transmission failure at 198 miles on the odometer and 3 days old. There had been intermittang lag/slippage from stop (much more than normal, but infrequent enough to wonder if it was my imagination). Day 3 the lag kicked in with a vengeance and transmission went into safe mode --would not shift out of 1st gear in any mode (D-S or manual). Limped off of the interstate and called VW Customer Care. 1 1/2 hrs later tow truck hauled it off to the dealer and a loaner was on the way. Dealer kept for a week trying to get failed part --valve body. Now it's working nicely and alot of fun, however I also experience the jerk occasionally when breaking as car shifts between 2 & 1st gear. I'm going to write a letter this weekend to VW documenting my displeasure over a part that never should have made it to assembly, much less the car lot, and my fear that this transmission might be destined to be a problem long term.

Melissa,

If the jerk you are getting is from engine braking at slow speeds in traffic while you have it in the triptronic mode and are letting the computer shift down from second to first, this is normal. It will feel like you slammed on the brakes, but are still moving. Caught me off gaurd the first time.
