The low beam lamp glows very dimly when the low beams are on but the lights go out completely on high. I have replaced both bulbs and checked the fuses. Does anyone have any suggestions? The passenger side lights both work.

This type of behavior is almost always a ground issue. Follow the brown ground wire from lamp to the frame bolt or make a ground probe from a wire connected to the - terminal of the battery. Use a 14 ga house wire and stick it in the connector. MAKE SURE YOU PROBE THE BROWN WIRE ONLY! The low beam should light up bright if it a grounding issue.

What kind of bulbs have you been using?

It sounds like plastic around the terminals (of the headlight connector) has been melted, causing a loose connection

I agree with Reference. It sounds like a bad ground, or maybe a bad power connection, but it usually turns out to be the ground.
