Balance shaft kit purchased from Bora, I have the Deluxe timing belt kit purchased from METALNERD for my 98 Beetle TDI.
I was curious if any of the tools used on the 98 beetle 1.9 tdi will work for the b5 engine.
I would be interested in either purchasing or renting the required tools to complete the balance shaft module job this next weekend starting Friday morning December 10th, 2010.
I'm hoping that all the parts will arrive by Thursday at the latest.
Anyone near Minnesota with the required tools?
If you send me a P.M., please include a phone number and I'll contact you a.s.a.p.

Thanks

Hi, can you provide a tool list and approximate cost?
Tool list is in the BSM replacement procedure PDF file here - http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=233651

Number/Source/Description/Price
BEWBHWKIT4PC/Metalnerd/Timing Belt Kit/$75.00
MNQ6H5/Metalnerd/Hex ball socket/$12.00
MNYANK-4CYL/Metalnerd/Crankshaft counter holder/$125.00
3393/VW-SnapOn/Alignment tool, subframe/$21.72
3411/VW-SnapOn/Lock carrier support pins/$19.32
T10053/VW-SnapOn/Crank seal installer/$18.72
T10255/VW-SnapOn/Balance shaft locking tool/$15.00
T10392/VW-SnapOn/Puller/$91.68
Total: $378.44
Prices may not be current and do not include freight!!!

edit: also pictured in post 2 is the 14mm XZN bit from Metalnerd (MNXZ14) that is $15.00

...plus many other hand tools, plus engine hanger, plus a service manual, plus lots and lots of time if it is your first attempt at this job. When you consider the investment in tools, time and risk of doing the job correctly, having someone trusted do the job looks very appealing.

Awesome...I just had my timing belt done 30k ago so I bet I can skip that for awhile. Are most of these tools proprietary vw tools sold by snap on? Thank you!

After I finished my BS swap, I kept my timing belt tools and sold the rest for 80% of the price I paid.

Just completed the balance shaft module change along with the timing belt change, calculated approx. 20 hours including a few tools we had to round up, so probably closer to 17.
A big thanks goes out to Chittychittybangbang for the tool rental assistance, car is so quiet now I can hear the idler bearing on the accessory belt tensioner going out.

cajun, you can use your lug wrench that came with the car. if you don't have a second one just cut it in two pieces. perfect fit for subframe

Dam i could have saved 22.00 and added some tools to my home made tool draw.LOL I did order few new tools you can never have to many. It does make things go a lot faster with the correct tools.
