I am planning on buying a 6 speed trans from Nathan. Are the trans from our tdi's the same as the Gasers ? I have buddy with a blown trns in his 99 Jetta. It would be nice to get some cash for my trans to help with the cost of the swap.

How hard was the swap for anyone who went to the 6 speed?

cheers

I'm sure it'll fit, but he might not be to happy with the relatively "taller"
overall gear ratios the TDIs have when compared to the gassers.

I would be fine for me, but if he likes to take off fast from a dead stop,
he might find the taller ratios not to his liking!

Regarding the 6-speed conversion, contact Svtweb directly.
I'm sure he'll give you all the "tips" you might need, as he is the
only person of record here that has done this modification.

As the Packard people used to say many years ago, "Ask the Man Who Owns One!"

Not true. I remember reading a post on here a couple of weeks ago that member Octavian had done the swap on his VW all by himself!

Yeah, now that you mention it, I do remember him giving you props for helping out with advice and tips. Has anyone heard what kind of mileage he's getting now that he has made the switch?

I was daydreaming the other day, and thinking, Hey, if I just wait SVTWeb out, he'll sell his car someday and I can get all the goodies. Because of course, he'll never be able to get good money out of his car, because it's been so heavily moded. Then I realized there are probably 50 people on Fred's with the same idea.

SVTWEB - What sort of mileage have you gained (if any
)?

Can you post some links to other threads that you've post on about this?

-Thanks!!!

The guy with the gasser might like the new ratios since VW gassers are geared to low to begine with, the ones I have driven turned about 3000 RPM at 70 mph, way to fast for a modern engine and it wastes gas

One of the reasons VW gears 'em like that is because, the 2. slows especially, only have what 120 hp?

More important than that, it's their total lack of torque when compared to what we daily take for granite.
What is the torque of the 2. slow, something like only 125 ft/lb?

I guess the overall gear ratios of the TDI tranny in a 2.slow would be okay
if the driver didn't mind dropping back to fourth or maybe even third speed
every time he came to a grade or wanted to pass someone in a timely manner!

the 2.slow surely must have more torque than the 1.6 that was in my mothers geo prism yet it was geared so that it turned about 2000 rpm at 70 and had no problems going up normal highway hill in high gear, and to pass, one should always expect to downshift a 4 cylinder gas car, I think that the current vw gearing is wasting fuel and wearing out engines faster
I would love to have a 6 speed in my TDI but cannot afford the approx $3000 it would take to get one with all the parts you need to install it, vw should offer them here as an option
