question is I have both a 2001 golf tdi and a new auto 2013 passat. With the 2001 I used to shift in the 2 to 3 k range on the rpm and keep it above 1800rpm for I had heard about issues with running in a low rpm i.e. intake manifold coking/ clogging and such. I noticed on the 2013 auto that the shift points are preferenced to keep the rpm as low as possible, normally I will see it run at 1000 to 1200 rpm. I know that there is a lot of newer technology out there with this engine but just wanted to ask the quesiton of weather or not this could be a possibility with this engine due to the shift points

Somebody make a sweet meme out of this phrase: Owns diesel car; Keeps rpms above 1800. That's about what my Golf spins cruising at 55mph.

Don't worry about intake clogging. It's not nearly the problem it used to be, the one advantage to ULSD fuel.

Th turbo on the ALH spun up around 1700rpm, I believe. The current Passat uses a smaller turbo that is used as low as about 1400rpm. THat's where I'd like the DSG programmed to keep it. Under 1400rpm is fine for the engine, but there is little torque without the turbo. As long as you regularly use the turbo in the 1500-3000rpm range, 1100-1400rpm is fine the engine for low load cruisng
